Vehicle: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES with about 75,000 miles on it, and I've noticed some concerning behavior from the transmission lately. When accelerating from a stop, especially uphill, there's a noticeable hesitation before the car really gets going. It feels like it's slipping or struggling to find the right 'gear' even though it's a CVT.

Also, sometimes when I'm cruising at highway speeds, the RPMs will suddenly jump up a few hundred without any change in my throttle input, then settle back down. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger CVT problem. Has anyone else experienced this with their Outlander Sport?

No warning lights are on, but the performance feels off. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're experiencing classic symptoms of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) issue, which can manifest as hesitation, slipping, or unusual RPM fluctuations. While CVTs are designed to operate smoothly, they can develop problems over time.

Here's what could be happening and what to do:

  1. Low or Degraded Transmission Fluid:

    • Cause: CVT fluid is crucial for proper operation. Low fluid levels or fluid that has degraded (lost its lubricating properties) can cause slipping and hesitation. Mitsubishi CVTs are sensitive to fluid quality.
    • Action: Check your transmission fluid level and condition. If it's low or looks dark/burnt, it needs attention. A fluid change might help, but it's critical to use the exact OEM-specified CVT fluid (e.g., Mitsubishi DiaQueen CVT Fluid J4 or J1).
  2. CVT Belt/Pulley Wear:

    • Cause: The internal components of the CVT, specifically the steel belt and conical pulleys, can wear down over time, leading to loss of friction and slipping.
    • Action: This is a more serious issue requiring professional diagnosis. A technician can inspect the transmission for internal wear.
  3. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues:

    • Cause: The TCM manages the CVT's operation. Software glitches or sensor failures within the TCM can cause erratic behavior.
    • Action: A diagnostic scan (even without a Check Engine Light) might reveal pending codes related to the TCM. Sometimes a software update or reset can resolve these.

When to see a shop: Given the symptoms, it's highly recommended to have your 2018 Outlander Sport inspected by a qualified mechanic or a Mitsubishi dealership as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a slipping transmission can lead to further, more expensive damage. They can perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, check fluid pressure, and inspect the transmission's overall health. Early intervention can sometimes prevent a full transmission replacement.
