Vehicle: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES

Hey everyone,

My check engine light came on in my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES a few days ago. I borrowed an OBD-II scanner and it's showing a P0420 code: 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'.

The car seems to be running okay, maybe a slight dip in fuel economy, but nothing major. No weird smells or loud exhaust noises that I can tell. I'm hoping it's not the catalytic converter itself, as I know those can be expensive.

Has anyone else experienced this specific code on their Outlander Sport or another Mitsubishi model? What was the culprit for you? Any advice on where to start troubleshooting before I take it to a mechanic?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The P0420 code indicates that the catalytic converter's efficiency is below the required threshold for Bank 1. While it often points to a failing catalytic converter, there are several other potential causes that should be investigated first.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Oxygen Sensors (O2 Sensors): Faulty upstream or downstream O2 sensors can send incorrect data to the engine control unit (ECU), leading it to falsely believe the catalytic converter is inefficient. A failing downstream O2 sensor is a common culprit for P0420.
  2. Exhaust Leaks: Leaks in the exhaust system before or near the catalytic converter can allow unmetered air in, affecting O2 sensor readings and triggering the code.
  3. Engine Misfires/Running Rich/Lean: Persistent engine issues like misfires, incorrect fuel mixture (too rich or too lean), or excessive oil consumption can damage the catalytic converter over time by introducing unburnt fuel or contaminants.
  4. Catalytic Converter Failure: Over time, catalytic converters can degrade due to age, mileage, or exposure to contaminants, losing their ability to properly convert harmful emissions.

When to see a shop:

  • Persistent Code: If the code returns shortly after clearing, or if you notice significant performance issues (e.g., lack of power, strong exhaust smell, excessive heat from under the car).
  • No DIY Experience: Diagnosing P0420 often requires specialized tools like a professional scan tool to monitor live O2 sensor data and backpressure tests. If you're not comfortable with these diagnostics, a qualified technician can accurately pinpoint the cause.
  • Visual Inspection: A mechanic can perform a thorough visual inspection for exhaust leaks, damaged sensors, or signs of catalytic converter overheating. They can also perform a smoke test for exhaust leaks or test the converter's efficiency directly.
