Vehicle: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES

Hi all,

I'm having a frustrating problem with the rearview camera in my 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES. When I put the car in reverse, sometimes the screen is just black, or it flickers on and off. Other times, it works perfectly fine. There's no pattern to it, it just seems random.

I've checked for any obvious obstructions on the camera lens, but it looks clean. Could this be a wiring issue, or is the camera itself failing? It's really annoying when trying to park, especially in tight spots.

Any suggestions on what to check or if this is a common problem?

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent rearview camera issues, such as a black screen or flickering, are common and typically point to a problem within the camera system's electrical components. Here are the most likely causes:

  1. Faulty Camera Unit: The camera itself, located on the tailgate, is exposed to the elements and can fail over time due to moisture intrusion, internal component degradation, or physical damage. This is a very common cause for intermittent operation.
  2. Wiring Harness Damage/Corrosion: The wiring harness that runs from the camera in the tailgate, through the tailgate hinge area, and into the vehicle's body is prone to wear and tear. Repeated opening and closing of the tailgate can cause wires to fray, break, or become corroded, leading to intermittent signal loss. This is a prime suspect for flickering or intermittent black screens.
  3. Loose Connection: A loose connection at either the camera end, the head unit end, or anywhere along the wiring path can cause the signal to drop out. Vibrations from driving can exacerbate this.
  4. Head Unit/Display Issue: While less common for intermittent issues specific to the camera (as other functions would likely be affected), a fault within the infotainment head unit or its display could also cause this. However, if other display functions work fine, it's less likely.
  5. Reverse Light Circuit: The camera often receives its power signal when the vehicle is put into reverse. A fault in the reverse light circuit (e.g., a faulty reverse light switch or wiring) could intermittently prevent the camera from powering on.

When to See a Shop:

  • Given the intermittent nature, a professional diagnosis is recommended. A Mitsubishi dealership or an automotive electrical specialist can perform a thorough inspection of the wiring harness, especially in the tailgate hinge area, for breaks or corrosion.
  • They can also test the camera unit's power and video signal directly to determine if the camera itself is faulty or if the issue lies further upstream in the wiring or head unit. While there aren't typically specific OBD-II codes for rearview camera faults, a shop can use a multimeter to check continuity and voltage, and potentially use a scope to check the video signal.
