Vehicle: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES

Hey everyone,

I've been hearing a really annoying clunking noise from the front end of my 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, ES trim. It seems to happen mostly when I go over small bumps or uneven pavement, and sometimes when I'm turning at low speeds.

It's not a constant sound, but it's definitely noticeable and getting a bit worse. I'm worried it might be something serious with the suspension. The car has about 45,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Outlander Sport or a similar Mitsubishi model? Any ideas what it could be before I take it to a shop? Thanks for any advice!

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a common complaint and can stem from several issues. It's important to address this promptly as it can affect handling and safety.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Worn Sway Bar End Links: These are a very frequent culprit for clunking noises, especially over bumps. The bushings or ball joints within the links can wear out, creating play and noise.
  2. Worn Control Arm Bushings: The lower control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. If the rubber bushings that isolate the control arm from the chassis wear out, you'll hear clunking, especially during acceleration, braking, or going over bumps.
  3. Bad Strut Mounts or Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, leading to noise. If the strut bearing is failing, you might hear noise when turning the steering wheel.
  4. Loose or Worn Ball Joints: While less common on newer vehicles, a worn lower ball joint can cause a clunking sound and is a critical safety concern.
  5. Loose Components: Sometimes, it can be as simple as a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose brake caliper.

When to See a Shop: You should definitely have your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. While some of these issues might seem minor, they can compromise your vehicle's handling, tire wear, and overall safety. A professional can safely lift the vehicle, inspect all suspension components for play, wear, and damage, and accurately diagnose the source of the clunking. Ignoring suspension noises can lead to more extensive and costly repairs down the line, or even dangerous driving conditions.
