2017 Outlander CVT Jerking and Slipping - What's going on?

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander GT with the 2.4L engine, and lately, the CVT has been acting really strange. When I'm driving at low speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic, it feels like the transmission is jerking quite a bit. It's not a smooth acceleration at all.

Also, sometimes when I try to accelerate harder, the engine RPMs will climb really high, but the car doesn't seem to gain speed proportionally. It feels like it's slipping. I'm worried this could be a major transmission issue. Has anyone else experienced this with their Outlander?

Any advice on what I should check or if this is a known problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Summary: For 2017 Outlander CVT Jerking and Slipping - What's going on?, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
