Vehicle: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL, and I'm hoping someone here might have some insight. Recently, the ABS warning light came on, and almost at the same time, the brake pedal started feeling a bit spongy. It doesn't feel like it's losing all braking power, but it definitely takes more effort and goes down further than it used to.

I checked the brake fluid reservoir, and it seems to be at a normal level. There are no obvious leaks that I can see around the calipers or lines. The car has about 75,000 miles on it, and I've kept up with regular maintenance.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their Outlander or another Mitsubishi model? Could this be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious with the ABS module itself? Any advice on what I should check next before taking it to a mechanic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common, yet critical, issue involving your Outlander's braking system. The combination of an illuminated ABS light and a spongy pedal points towards a problem that needs prompt attention. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The first and most crucial step is to get an OBD-II scanner and check for any stored C-codes (Chassis codes). Common codes related to ABS issues include:

    • C102A: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C102B: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C1031: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C1032: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • C1000: ABS Control Unit Malfunction These codes will help pinpoint the exact sensor or module that's causing the issue.
  2. Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring: If you get a code related to a specific wheel speed sensor, visually inspect that sensor and its wiring harness. Look for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Sometimes, road debris can damage these components.

  3. Brake Fluid Condition and Bleeding: While you mentioned the fluid level is normal, the spongy pedal could indicate air in the brake lines. This might happen if there was a minor leak that allowed air in, even if the fluid level didn't drop significantly. The system might need to be bled, especially if any work was recently done on the brakes.

  4. ABS Module Malfunction: In some cases, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair but can cause both the warning light and unusual pedal feel. If no sensor issues are found and bleeding doesn't help, a failing module is a strong possibility.

When to See a Shop: Given that the ABS light is on and you have a spongy brake pedal, it's highly recommended to have your 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. The ABS system is a critical safety feature, and compromised braking performance can be extremely dangerous. Do not delay this repair, as it affects your ability to stop safely, especially in emergency situations.
