Vehicle: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT with about 75,000 miles on it. Recently, the Check Engine Light came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0420 code.

The car seems to be running fine, no noticeable loss of power or strange noises. Fuel economy seems normal too. I'm just worried about what this code means and if it's something I need to address immediately.

Could this be a bad O2 sensor, or am I looking at a catalytic converter replacement? Any advice on how to diagnose this further before taking it to a shop would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0420 code, "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)," indicates that your vehicle's catalytic converter is not performing as efficiently as it should be. While it can sometimes be a precursor to a failing catalytic converter, it's crucial to rule out other common causes first.

Here are the steps to diagnose and potential causes:

  1. Check for Exhaust Leaks: An exhaust leak before or near the downstream oxygen sensor can cause incorrect readings, triggering a P0420. Listen for hissing sounds or look for soot around exhaust joints.
  2. Inspect Oxygen Sensors: While the code points to the catalyst, a faulty upstream or downstream oxygen sensor can provide inaccurate data. A diagnostic scan tool with live data capabilities can show O2 sensor voltage readings. The downstream sensor should show a relatively steady voltage compared to the fluctuating upstream sensor.
  3. Fuel System Issues: Problems like running too rich or too lean due to faulty fuel injectors, a leaking fuel pressure regulator, or a bad mass airflow (MAF) sensor can overload the catalytic converter over time. Check for other related codes.
  4. Catalytic Converter Condition: If the above checks come back clear, the catalytic converter itself might be failing. This can happen due to age, contamination from engine oil/coolant, or repeated misfires.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you lack a diagnostic scan tool with live data capabilities.
  • If you've checked for leaks and O2 sensor functionality and found no obvious issues.
  • If the Check Engine Light is flashing, indicating a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter further.
  • Catalytic converter replacement is a significant repair and often requires professional installation and diagnosis to ensure the root cause is addressed.
