Vehicle: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission issues with my 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL (V6, AWD) that has about 60,000 miles on it. Lately, the transmission has been shifting very hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes from 1st to 2nd. It's not smooth at all, almost like a jolt.

Also, when I put it into drive or reverse from park, there's a noticeable delay before it actually engages, sometimes a couple of seconds. There's no Check Engine Light on, and I haven't noticed any strange smells or leaks. I'm worried this could be a sign of a major transmission problem.

Has anyone else with a 2019 Outlander experienced similar symptoms? What was the cause? Is there anything I can check or try before taking it to a transmission shop?

Hard shifting and delayed engagement on your 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL are classic symptoms of potential transmission issues. Even without a Check Engine Light, these driveability concerns warrant immediate attention. The Outlander V6 typically uses a conventional automatic transmission, not a CVT, which has different failure modes.

Here are common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: This is the first and easiest thing to check. Low fluid levels can cause delayed engagement and hard shifts. Contaminated (dark, burnt-smelling) fluid indicates internal wear and potential overheating. Check the fluid level according to your owner's manual (often with the engine warm and running in Park).
  2. Transmission Solenoid Issues: Solenoids are electronic valves that control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. A failing or sticking solenoid can cause harsh shifts or delays. While a CEL might not always be present, a professional scan tool can often detect solenoid performance issues.
  3. Valve Body Problems: The valve body is the 'brain' of the automatic transmission, directing fluid pressure to various clutches and bands. Wear or blockages in the valve body can lead to erratic shifting and engagement problems.
  4. Internal Wear: Worn clutch packs, bands, or other internal components can cause slipping, hard shifts, and delays. This is typically a more serious and costly repair.
  5. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software/Failure: Sometimes, a software glitch or a failing TCM can cause shifting anomalies. A dealership might have software updates available or be able to diagnose a faulty module.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly. Transmission issues tend to worsen over time and can lead to more expensive repairs if neglected. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause further damage.
  • If fluid level is correct and clean: If the fluid looks good, the problem is likely internal and requires professional diagnosis.
  • Specialized Transmission Shop or Dealership: For transmission problems, it's best to consult a reputable transmission specialist or a Mitsubishi dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise to accurately pinpoint the issue, whether it's a simple solenoid replacement or a more extensive transmission overhaul.
