2020 Outlander: Persistent Squealing Brakes & ABS Light

Vehicle: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really annoying issue with my 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL. For the past few weeks, the brakes have been making a high-pitched squealing sound, especially when I'm braking lightly or coming to a stop. It's not constant, but it's frequent enough to be concerning.

What's more, the ABS warning light on my dashboard has started coming on intermittently. Sometimes it's on for a whole drive, other times it flickers or stays off. I've checked the brake fluid, and it seems to be at the correct level.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Outlander, particularly around this model year? I'm wondering if it's just worn pads, or if the ABS light points to something more serious. Any advice on what to check first or common culprits would be greatly appreciated before I take it to a shop.

It sounds like your 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander is experiencing a common combination of issues that warrant prompt attention. The squealing brakes and intermittent ABS light are definitely related to your braking system and potentially the suspension components.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Squealing Brakes:

    • Worn Brake Pads: This is the most common cause. As brake pads wear down, a small metal indicator tab (wear indicator) contacts the rotor, producing a high-pitched squeal.
    • Glazed Rotors/Pads: If the brakes have been overheated, the surface of the pads or rotors can become glazed, leading to noise.
    • Contamination: Dirt, dust, or even brake fluid/grease on the pads or rotors can cause squealing.
    • Improper Installation: If pads or rotors were recently replaced, incorrect installation or lack of proper lubrication on contact points can cause noise.
  2. ABS Warning Light:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction: This is a very common cause. The ABS system relies on wheel speed sensors to monitor each wheel's rotation. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or has a faulty wiring connection, it can trigger the light. A common OBD-II code for this is C0031 (Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction) or similar codes for other wheels (C0034, C0037, C0040).
    • Low Brake Fluid: While you've checked this, a very slight drop or a faulty sensor in the reservoir could trigger it.
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but a failing ABS control module can also cause the light to illuminate.
    • Faulty Tone Ring: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) on the axle or hub provides the speed sensor with its signal. If it's damaged or corroded, the sensor won't get a clear reading.

When to See a Shop: Given that you have both squealing brakes and an ABS light, it's highly recommended to have your Outlander inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. The ABS system is crucial for safe braking, especially in emergency situations. A shop can:

  • Perform a thorough brake inspection (pads, rotors, calipers).
  • Scan the vehicle's onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) system for specific ABS fault codes, which will pinpoint the exact sensor or system component causing the light.
  • Diagnose and repair the underlying cause of both the noise and the warning light, ensuring your braking system is fully functional and safe.
