Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SE

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV SE. Recently, a 'Hybrid System Warning' message has appeared on my dashboard, and simultaneously, I've noticed a significant reduction in my electric vehicle (EV) range. What used to be a reliable 24-mile range is now showing closer to 15-18 miles, even after a full charge.

Sometimes, the gasoline engine also seems to kick in more frequently than it should, even when the battery still has a decent charge. I haven't noticed any strange noises or performance issues with the gasoline engine itself, but the hybrid system feels off. There's no specific check engine light, just the hybrid warning.

Has anyone with a newer Outlander PHEV encountered this? What could be causing a hybrid system warning and a drop in EV range? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or does it definitely require a dealership visit?

A 'Hybrid System Warning' on your 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, especially when coupled with reduced EV range, indicates an issue within the complex hybrid powertrain. While there might not be a traditional 'Check Engine Light,' the hybrid system has its own diagnostic codes.

Possible Causes:

  1. High Voltage (HV) Battery Degradation/Fault: The most common cause for reduced EV range and hybrid warnings. Individual cells or the entire battery pack could be degrading or have a fault. Codes like P0A80 (Replace Hybrid Battery Pack) or P0A7A (Hybrid Battery Deterioration) are common.
  2. Battery Management System (BMS) Issues: The BMS monitors and balances the HV battery cells. A fault here can lead to incorrect readings or improper charging/discharging.
  3. Inverter/Converter Malfunction: These components manage the flow of power between the HV battery, electric motors, and the 12V system. A fault can disrupt the hybrid system's operation.
  4. Electric Motor/Generator Issues: Problems with the electric motors themselves, though less common, can trigger hybrid warnings.
  5. Cooling System for HV Components: The HV battery and inverter often have their own cooling systems. A fault (e.g., low coolant, pump failure) can cause components to overheat and trigger warnings.
  6. Software Glitch: Sometimes, a simple software update or reset can resolve intermittent hybrid warnings.

When to See a Shop: Any 'Hybrid System Warning' on a PHEV should be addressed by a Mitsubishi dealership or a specialized hybrid repair facility immediately. These systems are high voltage and require specific diagnostic tools and safety precautions. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high voltage components yourself.

What a Shop Will Do:

  1. Advanced Diagnostic Scan: They will use a specialized Mitsubishi diagnostic tool (MUT-III) to read specific hybrid system fault codes, which are different from standard OBD-II codes.
  2. HV Battery Health Check: They can assess the state of health (SOH) of your HV battery pack and identify any failing cells.
  3. Component Testing: They will test the inverter, converter, and related sensors.
  4. Software Updates: Check for and apply any relevant software updates for the hybrid control modules.

Ignoring these warnings can lead to further degradation of the HV battery, complete loss of EV capability, and potentially leave you stranded. Prompt professional attention is crucial.
