Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT

Hey everyone,

My 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT (with about 25,000 miles) just threw a 'Hybrid System Service Required' warning on the dash, along with a Check Engine Light. The car immediately went into a reduced power mode, and it feels sluggish, almost like it's only running on the gas engine without any electric assist. I tried restarting it a few times, but the warning comes back instantly.

I haven't had any issues with charging or driving until now. The battery was about 70% charged when this happened. I'm worried about driving it like this. Has anyone experienced this specific warning on their Outlander PHEV? What was the underlying cause? Is there anything I can do before taking it to the dealer?

The 'Hybrid System Service Required' warning combined with reduced power on your 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT indicates a fault within the complex hybrid powertrain. This system is highly integrated, and a fault in one component can trigger a cascade of warnings and put the vehicle into a 'limp home' mode to prevent further damage.

While a specific OBD-II code would be helpful for precise diagnosis, common issues that can trigger this warning in PHEVs include:

  1. High Voltage Battery System Fault: This could be an issue with a cell, the battery management system (BMS), or a sensor within the high-voltage battery pack. This is a common cause for reduced electric power.
  2. Inverter/Converter Malfunction: These components are crucial for converting power between the battery and electric motors. A fault here would directly impact electric drive capability.
  3. Electric Motor/Generator Issue: Problems with one of the electric motors (front or rear) can cause the system to shut down electric assist.
  4. Charging System Fault: While you mentioned no prior charging issues, a fault in the onboard charger or related components could manifest during driving.
  5. 12V Battery Issues: Surprisingly, a weak or failing 12V auxiliary battery can cause a myriad of seemingly unrelated electrical and hybrid system warnings, as it powers the control modules.
  6. Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Fault: Even though it's a hybrid warning, a severe fault in the gasoline engine (e.g., misfire, sensor failure) can also trigger the hybrid system to go into a protective mode.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. A 'Hybrid System Service Required' warning, especially with reduced power, is a critical alert. Driving the vehicle extensively in this state is not recommended and could potentially worsen the issue or leave you stranded.
  • Dealership is Best: For hybrid system issues, it's highly recommended to take your PHEV to a Mitsubishi dealership or a specialized hybrid repair shop. They have the proprietary diagnostic tools and training required to safely and accurately diagnose and repair high-voltage systems. Attempting to diagnose or repair high-voltage components without proper training and safety equipment is extremely dangerous.
