Musty Smell from AC in 2022 Outlander - Cabin Filter?

Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SE

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, SE trim, and lately, when I turn on the AC or even just the fan, there's a distinct musty, mildew-like smell coming through the vents. It's really noticeable, especially when I first start the car.

The car only has about 25,000 miles on it, so it's still pretty new. I'm wondering if this could be a dirty cabin air filter already, or if there's something else going on with the AC system. I live in a humid area, which might contribute. Has anyone else with a newer Outlander experienced this? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks!

A musty or mildew smell from your 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander's AC system is a common complaint, especially in humid climates, and it's usually related to moisture and microbial growth within the HVAC system. Here’s a plan of action:

  1. Replace the Cabin Air Filter: This is the most likely and easiest fix. Even at 25,000 miles, a cabin air filter can become saturated with dust, pollen, and moisture, creating a breeding ground for mold and mildew. The cabin filter in your Outlander is typically located behind the glove box and is a straightforward DIY replacement. Opt for a high-quality activated charcoal filter for better odor absorption.
  2. Use an AC System Cleaner/Deodorizer: If replacing the filter doesn't completely eliminate the smell, you can use an automotive AC system cleaner. These products are sprayed into the fresh air intake (usually located at the base of the windshield) or directly into the evaporator drain tube. They kill bacteria and fungi that cause the odor. Follow the product instructions carefully.
  3. Run Fan Before Shutting Off Engine: To prevent future odors, try running the fan on high (with the AC compressor off) for a few minutes before you reach your destination. This helps dry out the evaporator core, reducing the moisture that mold and mildew need to grow.
  4. Check Evaporator Drain Tube: Ensure the AC drain tube is not clogged. If it's blocked, water can pool in the evaporator housing, leading to odors and potentially water leaks inside the cabin. You can usually find the drain tube underneath the car, near the firewall, and gently clear it if blocked.

Common Causes:

  • Mold/Mildew Growth on Evaporator: The evaporator coil, which cools the air, gets wet during AC operation. If it doesn't dry properly, mold and mildew can grow on its surface.
  • Dirty Cabin Air Filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow and can harbor moisture and contaminants.
  • High Humidity: Contributes to moisture buildup in the HVAC system.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the smell persists after replacing the filter and using a cleaner.
  • If you notice water leaking inside the cabin, which could indicate a severely clogged drain or a more serious AC issue.
  • If the AC performance is also poor (not cooling effectively), as this might point to a refrigerant leak or compressor problem that requires professional diagnosis and repair.
