Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Altima SR

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with my 2020 Nissan Altima SR, which has about 45,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a distinct shuddering or hesitation, especially when accelerating from a stop or at very low speeds (under 20 mph). It feels like the transmission is struggling to engage smoothly.

There's no Check Engine Light on, and my basic OBD-II scanner isn't showing any stored or pending codes. However, the feeling is definitely getting worse and it's making me worried about the CVT.

Has anyone else with a newer Altima experienced similar CVT problems? What could be causing this, and what steps should I take? I'm hoping it's not a major transmission replacement.

Shuddering and hesitation in a Nissan CVT, especially at low speeds, is a known concern for some owners, even without a Check Engine Light. While your basic scanner might not show codes, a more advanced diagnostic tool might reveal pending or manufacturer-specific transmission codes.

Here's what could be contributing to the issue:

  1. CVT Fluid Condition: The most common culprit for CVT performance issues is the transmission fluid. Over time, CVT fluid can degrade, losing its friction properties, which can lead to shuddering. Nissan CVTs are very sensitive to fluid quality and level. A fluid change with the correct Nissan NS-3 fluid might resolve the issue if the fluid is old or contaminated.
  2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software: Sometimes, the TCM software can have glitches or require updates to improve shift logic and address drivability concerns. A Nissan dealership can check for and apply any available software updates.
  3. Torque Converter Issues: The torque converter can sometimes be a source of shuddering, particularly if its internal clutch is not engaging or disengaging smoothly.
  4. Valve Body Problems: The valve body within the CVT controls fluid pressure and flow. Issues here can lead to inconsistent operation and shuddering.
  5. Internal CVT Wear: In more severe cases, internal components of the CVT, such as the belt or pulleys, could be experiencing wear, leading to the symptoms you describe.

When to See a Shop: Given that this is a transmission-related issue and CVTs are complex, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 Nissan Altima SR to a reputable transmission specialist or a Nissan dealership as soon as possible. They can:

  • Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan using Nissan-specific tools to check for hidden codes.
  • Inspect the CVT fluid for level, condition, and contamination.
  • Check for any technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to your vehicle's symptoms.
  • Perform a road test with diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact cause of the shuddering. Early diagnosis can potentially prevent more extensive and costly repairs.
