Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Altima SR

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my 2020 Nissan Altima SR and its ProPILOT Assist system. Lately, I've been getting a 'ProPILOT Assist Malfunction' warning message on my dash, and the system becomes unavailable. It seems to happen randomly, sometimes on the highway, sometimes just after starting the car.

I've tried cleaning the radar sensor in the front bumper and the camera on the windshield, but it hasn't made a difference. The warning usually clears after I turn the car off and on again, but it always comes back eventually.

Is this a common problem with the 2020 Altimas? Could it be a sensor issue, or something more complex with the module? Any ideas on what might be triggering this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'ProPILOT Assist Malfunction' warning in your 2020 Nissan Altima SR indicates an issue with one or more components of the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). These systems rely on a network of sensors, cameras, and control modules.

Common Causes:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Misalignment: While you've cleaned them, even minor impacts or vibrations can cause radar or camera sensors to become slightly misaligned, triggering errors. Environmental factors like heavy rain, snow, or direct sunlight can also temporarily affect performance.
  2. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to any of the ADAS sensors (front radar, front camera, ultrasonic sensors) can interrupt communication and cause malfunctions.
  3. Module Failure: The ADAS control module itself, or related modules like the ABS/VDC module, could be experiencing an internal fault.
  4. Software Glitch: As with many complex electronic systems, a software bug or corrupted firmware in one of the ADAS modules can lead to intermittent errors.
  5. Battery Voltage: Low battery voltage can sometimes cause various electronic systems to malfunction or throw erroneous codes.

Relevant OBD-II Codes:

When this warning appears, a diagnostic scan will often reveal specific codes. Look for:

  • U-codes: (e.g., U0100, U0121) indicating communication loss with specific modules (e.g., radar sensor, camera module, ABS module).
  • C-codes: (e.g., C1A00, C1A01) related to chassis systems, often pointing directly to radar or camera sensor faults, calibration issues, or internal module errors.

When to See a Shop:

  • Given the safety-critical nature of ADAS, it's highly recommended to have this diagnosed by a Nissan dealership or a specialized shop. They have the proprietary diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact sensor or module causing the issue.
  • Calibration of ADAS sensors often requires specialized equipment after replacement or if misalignment is detected. This is not a DIY task.
  • If the warning is persistent or affects other vehicle functions, seek immediate professional attention.
