2022 Kicks SR getting terrible MPG lately

Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks SR

I have a 2022 Nissan Kicks SR with about 30,000 miles on it, and I've noticed a significant drop in my fuel economy over the last month or so. I used to get around 33-35 MPG combined, but now I'm lucky to hit 28 MPG, even with careful driving.

There's no check engine light on, and the car seems to be running fine otherwise – no strange noises or performance issues. I've checked tire pressure, and it's good. What could be causing such a noticeable drop in fuel efficiency without any other obvious symptoms?

  1. Initial Diagnosis: A sudden and significant drop in fuel economy without an illuminated Check Engine Light (CEL) or noticeable performance issues can be frustrating to diagnose but often points to subtle changes in engine efficiency or sensor readings.
  2. Common Causes:
    • Oxygen (O2) Sensors: Even if not bad enough to trigger a CEL, a sluggish or slightly inaccurate O2 sensor can cause the engine to run slightly rich, consuming more fuel.
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty MAF sensor can send incorrect air intake data to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), leading to an improper fuel-air mixture and reduced efficiency.
    • Spark Plugs: While typically causing misfires, slightly worn spark plugs can reduce combustion efficiency, leading to higher fuel consumption.
    • Air Filter: A clogged engine air filter restricts airflow, forcing the engine to work harder and consume more fuel.
    • Fuel Injectors: Slightly clogged fuel injectors might not spray fuel optimally, affecting combustion efficiency.
    • Driving Habits/Fuel Quality: Changes in driving routes, increased idling, or poor quality fuel can also impact MPG.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • Routine Maintenance Check: Start by ensuring all routine maintenance, like air filter replacement and spark plug inspection, is up to date based on your 2022 Kicks' mileage.
    • Diagnostic Scan (Even Without CEL): A professional scan tool can still read "pending" codes or monitor live data from sensors (like O2 and MAF) to identify if they are operating within optimal parameters, even if they haven't triggered a hard fault code.
    • Sensor Cleaning/Replacement: A mechanic can clean the MAF sensor. If O2 sensor data looks suspicious, replacement might be considered.
    • Fuel System Cleaner: A high-quality fuel system cleaner added to your tank might help with slightly clogged injectors. A professional assessment can pinpoint the exact cause of the decreased fuel economy.
