2022 Kicks SV - ProPILOT Assist unavailable, sensor error

Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks SV

My 2022 Nissan Kicks SV is showing a "ProPILOT Assist unavailable" message, and sometimes a "Front Radar Sensor Blocked" warning, even when the front radar sensor is completely clean. This started happening intermittently a few weeks ago, and now it's almost constant, making the system unusable.

I've tried cleaning the sensor area thoroughly, but it doesn't make a difference. Is there a common issue with these sensors or their calibration? I'm worried about having to replace an expensive part.

The "ProPILOT Assist unavailable" and "Front Radar Sensor Blocked" messages in your 2022 Nissan Kicks SV, especially when the sensor is clean, point to an issue with the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) or its components. Here's what could be happening:

  1. Sensor Misalignment/Calibration: The front radar sensor (often located behind the Nissan emblem or lower grille) is extremely sensitive to alignment. Even a minor bump or vibration can knock it out of calibration. This would cause it to misinterpret its surroundings, triggering error messages.
  2. Wiring or Connector Issue: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front radar sensor for any visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Water intrusion or physical damage could disrupt the signal.
  3. Software Glitch: Sometimes, a software bug in the ADAS control module can cause these intermittent errors. A software update from the dealership might resolve it.
  4. Faulty Radar Sensor: If all else checks out, the radar sensor itself might be internally faulty. This is less common but can occur.
  5. Other ADAS Components: ProPILOT Assist relies on multiple sensors (camera, radar). An issue with the front camera (mounted at the top of the windshield) or its wiring could also cause the system to fault, even if the message points to the radar.

When to see a shop: ADAS systems like ProPILOT Assist are complex and require specialized diagnostic tools and calibration equipment. You should take your Kicks to a Nissan dealership. They can:

  • Read specific ADAS fault codes (e.g., C1A00: Front Radar Sensor Malfunction, U0428: Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module).
  • Check for and install any available software updates.
  • Perform a radar sensor calibration using specialized equipment, which is often needed after any impact or even after replacing a windshield.
  • Diagnose and replace a faulty sensor or wiring if necessary. Attempting to diagnose or repair this yourself without the proper tools can lead to further issues or unsafe operation of the ADAS features.
