Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks S

Hey Nissan Kicks owners,

I have a 2022 Nissan Kicks S with about 30,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed that the AC airflow seems really weak, even on the highest setting. It also feels like the cabin is dustier than usual, and sometimes I get a slight musty smell. On top of that, the engine feels a little sluggish, and my fuel economy seems to have dipped slightly.

I'm thinking it's probably time to check and possibly replace both the cabin air filter and the engine air filter. I haven't changed them since I bought the car. Are these easy DIY jobs on the Kicks? Any specific filter recommendations or things to watch out for during replacement?

Thanks for any tips!

It sounds like you've correctly identified the likely culprits for your symptoms! Both the cabin air filter and engine air filter are crucial for your vehicle's performance and your comfort. At 30,000 miles, it's definitely time for an inspection and likely replacement.

  1. Cabin Air Filter:
    • Symptoms: Weak AC airflow, dusty cabin, musty odors, and reduced heating/cooling efficiency are all classic signs of a clogged cabin air filter.
    • Location: On the Nissan Kicks, the cabin air filter is typically located behind the glove compartment. You'll usually need to unclip or remove the glove box to access the filter housing.
    • DIY Difficulty: This is generally a very easy DIY job, often requiring no tools or just a screwdriver to remove a few screws. There are many online videos demonstrating the process for the Kicks.
    • Replacement: Simply slide out the old filter, note its orientation (airflow direction arrow), and slide in the new one. Consider a charcoal-activated filter for better odor control.
  2. Engine Air Filter:
    • Symptoms: Reduced engine performance, decreased fuel economy, and sometimes a slightly rougher idle can indicate a dirty engine air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow to the engine, making it work harder.
    • Location: The engine air filter is located in the air filter box under the hood, usually a large black plastic box connected to the engine's intake.
    • DIY Difficulty: Also a very easy DIY task. You typically unclip a few metal clips or unscrew a few screws around the perimeter of the air filter box to open it up.
    • Replacement: Remove the old filter, clean out any debris from the airbox, and insert the new filter, ensuring it sits flush within the housing.
  3. Maintenance Intervals:
    • Cabin Air Filter: Recommended replacement every 15,000-30,000 miles or once a year, depending on driving conditions (more often if you drive in dusty areas or have allergies).
    • Engine Air Filter: Recommended replacement every 15,000-30,000 miles or once a year, depending on driving conditions.
  4. Filter Recommendations: Any reputable aftermarket brand (e.g., Fram, K&N, Bosch) will work well, or you can opt for genuine Nissan parts. Just ensure the filter matches your Kicks' specific year and engine.
  5. When to See a Shop: If replacing both filters doesn't resolve your issues, or if you encounter any difficulties during the replacement, a mechanic can further diagnose the AC system (e.g., refrigerant levels, blower motor) or engine performance issues.
