2022 Nissan Kicks SR - Key Fob Not Detected, Won't Start

Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks SR

I'm having a major problem with my 2022 Nissan Kicks SR. This morning, I got in, pressed the brake, and pushed the start button, but nothing. The dash says 'Key Fob Not Detected.' I tried both of my key fobs, and replaced the battery in the one I usually use, but still the same message.

I tried holding the fob right up to the start button, which sometimes works as a workaround, but even that isn't helping this time. The car won't even try to crank. The immobilizer light (car with a key symbol) is also flashing.

What could be causing this? Is there a known issue with the Kicks or a specific sensor that might be failing?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This is a common and frustrating issue with modern vehicles equipped with push-button start systems. The 'Key Fob Not Detected' message and the flashing immobilizer light on your 2022 Nissan Kicks SR indicate a problem with the vehicle's ability to communicate with or recognize your key fob, preventing the engine from starting.

Possible Causes:

  1. Key Fob Battery (Even New Ones): While you replaced the battery, sometimes new batteries can be faulty, or installed incorrectly. Double-check the orientation and try another fresh battery if possible.
  2. Vehicle Battery (Low Charge): A weak or dying 12V car battery can cause various electrical gremlins, including issues with key fob detection and starting. The car might have just enough power for dash lights but not enough for the full starting sequence and key detection.
  3. Key Fob Itself: The key fob might be faulty internally, even with a new battery. This could be due to physical damage or internal component failure.
  4. Intelligent Key System Antenna/Receiver: Your Kicks has antennas around the cabin that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas or its wiring is faulty, the car won't 'see' the fob.
  5. Immobilizer System Malfunction: The vehicle's immobilizer system, which prevents unauthorized starting, might have a fault. This could be a BCM (Body Control Module) issue or a problem with the immobilizer unit itself.
  6. RF Interference: Less common, but strong radio frequency interference from external sources (e.g., cell towers, power lines, other electronic devices) can sometimes temporarily block the key fob signal.

Initial Steps for Diagnosis/Troubleshooting:

  1. Check Car Battery: Test your car's main 12V battery. If it's weak, a jump start might allow the car to recognize the fob and start.
  2. Fob Position: Ensure you're placing the key fob directly against the start button as per the owner's manual's emergency start procedure. Sometimes there's a specific spot.
  3. Check for OBD Codes: While this might not trigger a standard P-code, an advanced scanner might pull B-codes (Body codes) related to the immobilizer or smart entry system, such as B210A (Key Not Detected).

When to See a Shop:

If a fresh battery in the fob, a healthy car battery, and the emergency start procedure don't work, you'll need to have your Kicks towed to a Nissan dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith. They have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Test the key fobs themselves.
  • Diagnose the Intelligent Key system's antennas and receiver.
  • Check for faults within the BCM or immobilizer system.
  • Reprogram or replace key fobs if necessary. This issue will prevent you from driving, so professional assistance is required.
