Vehicle: 2023 Nissan Kicks S

I'm having a really frustrating problem with my 2023 Nissan Kicks S. This morning, I got into the car, pressed the brake, and pushed the start button, but nothing happened. Instead, I got a 'Key Not Detected' message on the dash.

I thought it was the key fob battery, so I replaced it with a brand new one, but the message is still there, and the car won't start. I tried the emergency start procedure (holding the fob against the start button), but that didn't work either.

Has anyone else with a newer Kicks experienced this? It's only a year old, and I'm stumped. What could be causing this if it's not the fob battery?

It's incredibly frustrating when your relatively new 2023 Nissan Kicks S won't start and displays a 'Key Not Detected' message, especially after replacing the key fob battery. This issue can stem from several points within the vehicle's intelligent key system.

Here are potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Second Key Fob: The first thing to try is your spare key fob. If the spare works, it confirms an issue with the primary fob, even if you've replaced its battery. The fob itself might be faulty or have an internal issue.
  2. Vehicle Battery: While the message points to the key, a weak or dying 12V car battery can sometimes cause strange electrical gremlins, including issues with key detection or starting. Even if accessories work, there might not be enough power for the starter and intelligent key system. Have your car battery tested.
  3. Key Fob Signal Interference: Sometimes, strong radio frequency interference from nearby devices (like cell towers, other electronic devices, or even items in your pocket/bag) can block the key fob's signal. Try starting the car in a different location or with fewer electronics around.
  4. Intelligent Key System Antenna/Receiver: Your Kicks has antennas located around the cabin that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas or the intelligent key control unit itself is faulty, it won't detect the key. This is a less common but possible hardware failure.
  5. OBD Codes: While not always directly related to 'Key Not Detected,' the Body Control Module (BCM) might store codes related to the immobilizer or key system, such as B210A (Key Fob Not Recognized) or B210B (Key Fob Battery Low - even if you replaced it, the system might not be registering it correctly).

When to See a Shop: If trying your spare key, checking the car battery, and attempting the emergency start procedure (correctly, ensuring the fob is directly touching the start button) don't work, it's time to have your Kicks towed to a Nissan dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to communicate with the intelligent key system, diagnose antenna issues, or reprogram/replace faulty key fobs or control units. Given it's a 2023 model, it's likely still under warranty, making a dealership visit the most logical next step.
