Vehicle: 2023 Nissan Kicks SV

Hello everyone,

I'm having a major problem with my 2023 Nissan Kicks SV, which only has about 15,000 miles on it. This morning, I went to start it, and absolutely nothing happened. No crank, no engine turning over, just silence. All the dashboard lights come on, and the radio works, but the car won't start.

I'm also getting a message on the dash that says 'Key System Error' or something similar, even though I have the intelligent key with me and the battery in the key fob is new. I've tried both key fobs, and neither works. I also tried the emergency start procedure (holding the fob to the start button), but still nothing.

Could this be a battery issue, even though the lights work? Or is it more likely a problem with the intelligent key system or immobilizer? Any suggestions on what to check or try before calling for a tow?

A 'no start, no crank' condition combined with an 'Intelligent Key System Error' on your 2023 Nissan Kicks SV points to a communication issue between your key fob, the vehicle's immobilizer, or a power supply problem that's preventing the starter from engaging. Even if dashboard lights come on, it doesn't rule out a weak main battery.

Here's a diagnostic approach:

  1. Check Main Battery Voltage: While lights and radio work, the starter motor requires a significant amount of current. A weak battery (below 12.0V, especially under load) might not have enough power to crank the engine. Use a multimeter to check the battery voltage. If it's low, try jump-starting the vehicle. If it starts with a jump, the battery or charging system (alternator) is likely the culprit.
  2. Battery Terminals and Cables: Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure they are clean and tightly connected. Also, check the main ground cable from the battery to the chassis and engine for any looseness or corrosion.
  3. Intelligent Key System Interference: Ensure there are no other electronic devices (like cell phones, other key fobs, or RFID cards) near the intelligent key when attempting to start, as they can sometimes cause interference.
  4. Brake Pedal Switch: The vehicle requires the brake pedal to be depressed to start. Ensure the brake lights illuminate when you press the pedal. A faulty brake pedal switch can prevent the starter from engaging, even if the key system is recognized.
  5. Steering Wheel Lock: Sometimes, if the steering wheel is under pressure, the electronic steering lock can prevent starting. Try wiggling the steering wheel gently while attempting to start.

When to See a Shop: If a jump-start doesn't work, the battery terminals are clean and tight, and you've tried the emergency start procedure without success, it's time to call for a tow to a Nissan dealership or a qualified automotive technician. The 'Key System Error' message suggests a deeper issue with the immobilizer, the intelligent key control unit, or the body control module (BCM). These systems often require specialized diagnostic tools to troubleshoot and potentially reprogram components.
