Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Altima SR

I've noticed a persistent clunking or rattling sound coming from the front end of my 2020 Nissan Altima SR, especially when I go over speed bumps or uneven roads. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable and sounds like something is loose.

The car has around 45,000 miles. I haven't hit any major potholes recently, but the roads around here aren't the best. Could this be a strut issue, or something else entirely? It's making me a bit nervous about the car's handling.

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, typically indicates wear or looseness in one or more suspension components. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Sway Bar Links (Stabilizer Links): These are a very common source of clunking noises. The bushings or ball joints within the links can wear out, causing play and noise when the suspension moves.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings that connect the control arms to the vehicle frame can deteriorate over time, leading to metal-on-metal contact and a clunking sound.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, allowing the strut to move excessively. The strut bearing, which allows the strut to rotate with the steering, can also fail and cause noise.
  4. Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints (depending on your Altima's suspension design) can cause clunking, especially when turning or going over bumps.
  5. Tie Rod Ends: While more commonly associated with steering play, worn inner or outer tie rod ends can sometimes contribute to suspension noise.

When to See a Shop:

  • Suspension issues can affect steering, handling, and tire wear, so it's important to address them promptly.
  • A professional technician can perform a thorough inspection, often using a lift to check for play in all suspension components.
  • They can accurately diagnose the source of the noise and recommend the appropriate repairs, which might involve replacing specific worn parts rather than the entire assembly.
