Vehicle: 2019 Nissan Titan PRO-4X

Hello Titan owners, I'm experiencing some concerning issues with my 2019 Nissan Titan PRO-4X, which has about 60,000 miles on it. Lately, the transmission has been shifting very roughly, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's hunting for gears. On top of that, I've had the 'Service Engine Soon' light come on intermittently, along with the 'Transmission Malfunction' warning.

I've tried restarting the truck, and sometimes the lights go away for a bit, but the rough shifting persists. Is this a common problem for the 2019 Titan? I'm wondering if there are any known TSBs or recalls related to the transmission or electrical system that might be causing this.

Before I take it to the dealer, I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with similar symptoms and what the resolution was. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Rough shifting combined with 'Service Engine Soon' and 'Transmission Malfunction' warnings on your 2019 Nissan Titan PRO-4X definitely indicates a significant issue that needs immediate attention. This is not normal operation for a truck with 60,000 miles.

Here are the potential causes and steps to take:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issues: The TCM is responsible for managing the transmission's shifting. Software glitches, internal failures, or communication problems can lead to erratic shifting and warning lights.
    • Valve Body Malfunction: Similar to CVTs, conventional automatic transmissions have valve bodies that can fail, causing incorrect fluid pressure and rough shifts.
    • Transmission Solenoid Problems: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage gears. Faulty solenoids can lead to delayed or harsh shifts.
    • Wiring Harness or Sensor Issues: Damaged wiring or faulty speed sensors (input/output) can send incorrect data to the TCM, resulting in shifting problems and triggering warning lights.
    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: While less common for sudden onset, incorrect fluid levels or severely degraded fluid can impact shifting performance.
  2. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The 'Service Engine Soon' light indicates that DTCs are stored in the vehicle's computer. Common codes related to transmission issues include:

    • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (a generic code indicating a problem).
    • P07XX series: Specific codes related to transmission range sensor, solenoid performance, or pressure control.
    • P17XX series: Manufacturer-specific codes for transmission issues.
  3. TSBs and Recalls: Nissan has issued TSBs for various transmission-related concerns on the Titan, including software updates and component replacements for certain model years. It's crucial to have a Nissan dealership check for any applicable TSBs or recalls using your VIN, as some might directly address your symptoms.

  4. When to See a Shop: Do not delay in getting your Titan to a reputable mechanic or Nissan dealership. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause further damage to the transmission. They will need to:

    • Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan to retrieve all stored DTCs.
    • Inspect transmission fluid level and condition.
    • Check for any electrical issues, including wiring and sensor integrity.
    • Perform a road test and potentially advanced diagnostics to pinpoint the exact cause.

Addressing this promptly can prevent a more expensive repair, such as a full transmission overhaul or replacement.
