Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Murano Platinum

My 2020 Nissan Murano Platinum is having some serious issues with its infotainment system. It frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive, and then randomly reboots itself. Sometimes it'll work fine for an hour, other times it reboots every 10 minutes.

This affects everything: navigation, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and even the backup camera sometimes glitches or doesn't come on at all. It's incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm trying to use navigation.

Is this a known issue with the Murano? Are there any software updates or resets I can try before heading to the dealership?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing and random reboots are common across many modern vehicles, including the 2020 Nissan Murano. These systems are essentially complex computers, and like any computer, they can experience software bugs or hardware issues.

Possible Causes:

  1. Software Glitch: The most common cause. A bug in the system's firmware can lead to instability, freezing, and reboots. This is often addressed with software updates.
  2. Corrupted Data/Cache: Over time, accumulated data or a corrupted file within the system's memory can cause performance issues.
  3. Loose Connection: A loose wiring connection to the head unit or a related module could cause intermittent power loss or signal disruption.
  4. Overheating: While less common, the head unit could be overheating, causing it to shut down and reboot.
  5. Faulty Hardware: The infotainment unit itself might have an internal hardware defect that causes it to malfunction.
  6. Accessory Interference: Sometimes, a connected USB device or a faulty SD card (if applicable for navigation) can cause system instability.

Initial Steps for Diagnosis/Troubleshooting:

  1. Soft Reset: Try a soft reset of the infotainment system. This usually involves holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. Consult your owner's manual for the specific procedure for your Murano.
  2. Disconnect Battery: As a last resort for a full reset, you can disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery for 15-30 minutes. Be aware this might reset other vehicle settings.
  3. Remove Accessories: Disconnect any USB devices, SD cards, or Bluetooth devices to see if they are causing interference.

When to See a Shop:

If a soft reset or battery disconnect doesn't resolve the issue, or if the problem recurs frequently, it's time to visit a Nissan dealership. They can:

  • Check for and install any available software/firmware updates for your infotainment system.
  • Perform diagnostic tests on the head unit and associated modules.
  • Inspect wiring and connections.
  • If necessary, replace the infotainment head unit. As your vehicle is a 2020 model, it may still be under warranty, which could cover this repair.
