Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks SV

Hello Nissan forum,

I'm having a really annoying problem with my 2022 Nissan Kicks SV. Sometimes, when I try to start the car, I get a 'Key Fob Not Detected' message, even though the fob is right there in my hand or pocket. I have to hold the fob right up to the start button for it to work, and even then, it's not always immediate.

I've replaced the battery in both of my key fobs, but the issue persists. It's intermittent, but seems to be happening more frequently now. It's really inconvenient when I'm in a hurry.

Could this be an issue with the car's antenna for the keyless entry system, or maybe a problem with the immobilizer? Has anyone else with a Kicks experienced this, and what was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Key Fob Not Detected' issue in your 2022 Nissan Kicks SV, even after replacing fob batteries, points to a problem with the vehicle's Intelligent Key system. This system relies on several components to communicate with your key fob.

Common Causes:

  1. Intelligent Key Antenna/Receiver: Your Kicks has multiple antennas (e.g., in the center console, trunk, door handles) that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas or its associated wiring is faulty or obstructed, it can lead to intermittent detection issues.
  2. Interference: External radio frequency (RF) interference from nearby electronic devices, cell towers, or even certain types of LED lights can sometimes disrupt the key fob's signal.
  3. BCM (Body Control Module) Issues: The BCM is responsible for processing signals from the Intelligent Key system. A fault within the BCM could cause detection problems.
  4. Wiring Problems: Damaged or corroded wiring between the antennas, receiver, and BCM can interrupt communication.
  5. Key Fob Itself (less likely if both fobs have new batteries): Although you've replaced batteries, a rare internal fault in the fob could still occur.

Relevant OBD-II Codes:

When scanned with a Nissan-specific tool, you might find:

  • B-codes: (e.g., B2100 - NATS Malfunction, B2190 - Key ID Mismatch, B2600 - Intelligent Key Antenna Circuit) related to the body control module, immobilizer, or keyless entry system components.
  • U-codes: (e.g., U0140) indicating communication loss with the BCM or other related modules.

When to See a Shop:

  • Since you've already replaced the key fob batteries, the next step is professional diagnosis. A Nissan dealership or a shop with advanced diagnostic tools can pinpoint which specific antenna or module is at fault.
  • They can check the signal strength from your key fobs, test the vehicle's receiver antennas, and scan for specific B-codes that will guide the repair.
  • If the issue is with the BCM or an antenna, replacement and potentially reprogramming will be required, which is a job for a qualified technician.
