2022 Kicks SV sudden drop in MPG and Check Engine Light (P0420)

Vehicle: 2022 Nissan Kicks SV

My 2022 Nissan Kicks SV, with about 30,000 miles, just threw a Check Engine Light. I also noticed a pretty significant drop in my fuel economy over the last week or so, going from a consistent 33-35 MPG down to around 28-29 MPG. The car feels a little sluggish, too.

I scanned the code, and it's P0420: "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)". I'm really hoping it's not a bad catalytic converter already! Is there anything else that could cause this code, like an oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak? What's the typical fix for this?

It's still under warranty, but I want to be informed before I take it to the dealership.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0420 code, "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)," is indeed a common code that points to an issue with your catalytic converter's ability to efficiently convert exhaust gases. While it often indicates a failing catalytic converter, other issues can trigger this code.

Possible Causes for P0420:

  1. Failing Catalytic Converter: This is the most direct cause. Over time, the catalyst material inside the converter can degrade or become contaminated, losing its efficiency.
  2. Faulty Oxygen Sensors: Specifically, the downstream (post-catalyst) oxygen sensor monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter. If this sensor is faulty, it might incorrectly report low efficiency, triggering the P0420 code. The upstream (pre-catalyst) sensor can also be a factor if it's causing an incorrect air/fuel mixture.
  3. Exhaust Leaks: Leaks in the exhaust system before or between the oxygen sensors can allow unmetered air in, skewing sensor readings and leading the ECU to believe the converter is inefficient.
  4. Engine Misfires/Running Rich: Persistent engine misfires or an engine running excessively rich (too much fuel) can overheat and damage the catalytic converter over time, leading to its premature failure.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: While your Kicks is still driving, the P0420 code indicates increased emissions and potentially reduced fuel economy. More importantly, if the catalytic converter is truly failing, it can eventually become clogged, leading to severe power loss and potentially overheating the engine. Since your vehicle is still under warranty, it's best to take it to a Nissan dealership for diagnosis and repair.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Professional Scan Tool Analysis: A dealership technician will use an advanced scan tool to monitor live data from both upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. This data is crucial for determining if the converter is truly inefficient or if a sensor is faulty.
  2. Exhaust System Inspection: They will check for any exhaust leaks, especially around the manifold and catalytic converter.
  3. Engine Performance Check: They will ensure there are no underlying engine issues (like misfires or incorrect fuel trim) that could be contributing to the converter's inefficiency or damage.
  4. Catalytic Converter Replacement: If tests confirm the converter is indeed faulty, it will likely be replaced under warranty.
