Rough idle and P0301 on 2021 Nissan Kicks

Vehicle: 2021 Nissan Kicks SR

My 2021 Nissan Kicks SR, which has about 45,000 miles on it, has recently started to develop a rough idle. I also feel a slight hesitation during acceleration sometimes. The check engine light came on yesterday, and I used my OBD-II scanner to pull the code. It came up as P0301, which indicates a Cylinder 1 Misfire.

Could this be spark plugs already at this mileage? I thought spark plugs usually last longer. What's involved in changing them on the Kicks, and should I be looking at anything else first given the P0301 code?

A P0301 code (Cylinder 1 Misfire) combined with a rough idle and hesitation on your 2021 Nissan Kicks at 45,000 miles points directly to an issue with the ignition or fuel delivery in cylinder 1. While 45k miles might seem a bit early for spark plugs, it's definitely within the range where they can start to show wear, especially if it's an Iridium plug with a longer service life expectation.

Here's a diagnostic and maintenance plan:

  1. Common Causes for P0301:
    • Worn Spark Plug: The most common cause. The electrode gap can widen, or the plug can foul.
    • Faulty Ignition Coil: The coil pack for cylinder 1 might be failing.
    • Clogged or Failing Fuel Injector: The injector for cylinder 1 might not be delivering enough fuel.
    • Vacuum Leak: Less common for a single cylinder misfire but possible.
    • Low Compression: The least likely but most serious cause, indicating internal engine damage.
  2. Diagnostic Steps (DIY):
    • Swap Ignition Coil: A great first step. Locate the ignition coil for cylinder 1 (check your owner's manual or a service diagram for cylinder numbering, usually front-left). Swap it with a coil from a different cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2). Clear the code. If the misfire moves to cylinder 2 (P0302), you've found your faulty coil.
    • Inspect/Replace Spark Plug: If swapping the coil doesn't change the misfire, remove the spark plug from cylinder 1. Inspect it for fouling, excessive wear, or damage. It's often a good idea to replace all spark plugs at this point, as they are a maintenance item.
  3. Spark Plug Replacement on Kicks:
    • The Nissan Kicks typically uses long-life iridium spark plugs. You'll need specific iridium plugs (e.g., NGK or Denso, check your owner's manual for the exact part number).
    • The process involves removing the engine cover, disconnecting the electrical connector from each ignition coil, unbolting the coil, and carefully pulling it out. Then, use a spark plug socket with an extension to remove and replace the plugs. Ensure proper torque (usually around 18-22 ft-lbs) to avoid damage.
  4. When to See a Shop:
    • If swapping the coil and replacing the plug doesn't resolve the P0301 code, or if the misfire persists. This could indicate a fuel injector issue or a more complex problem requiring professional diagnosis (e.g., compression test).
    • If you're uncomfortable performing the DIY steps, a mechanic can diagnose and fix the issue efficiently.
