2018 Rogue CVT acting up - jerking and whining!

My 2018 Nissan Rogue SV, with about 75,000 miles, has started acting really strange lately. When accelerating from a stop or at low speeds, it sometimes jerks quite noticeably. There's also a distinct whining noise coming from the transmission area, especially when I'm cruising on the highway.

I'm worried this is a sign of a major CVT problem. I've heard about issues with Nissan CVTs in the past, but I was hoping my model year would be past the worst of it. The car feels sluggish at times, too.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 2018 Rogue or similar Nissan models? What should I be looking for, and is there anything I can do before taking it to the dealership? I'm trying to avoid a costly repair if possible.

Summary: For 2018 Rogue CVT acting up - jerking and whining!, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
