Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Rogue S

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2020 Nissan Rogue S. This morning, it just wouldn't start. It cranks strong and fast, so I don't think it's the battery. But it just won't catch and turn over. It sounds like it's trying, but there's no ignition.

There's no Check Engine Light on, which makes it even more confusing. I've tried both keys, thinking maybe it was an immobilizer issue, but no luck. Could this be a fuel pump problem, or maybe something with the spark? Any ideas on what to check first for a no-start condition like this on a relatively new Rogue?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'cranks but no start' condition on your 2020 Nissan Rogue S typically points to an issue with either fuel, spark, or air, assuming the battery and starter are confirmed good. Since there's no CEL, it might be a component that doesn't immediately trigger an emission-related code.

Common Causes:

  • Fuel Delivery Issue: This is a primary suspect. It could be a faulty fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or an issue with the fuel pressure regulator.
  • Ignition System Failure: While less common without a CEL, a problem with spark plugs, ignition coils, or even the crankshaft position sensor could prevent ignition.
  • Immobilizer System: Although you've tried both keys, a fault in the immobilizer antenna or module can prevent the engine from starting even if it cranks.
  • Air Intake/Sensor Issues: Less likely for a sudden no-start, but a severely blocked air filter or a faulty MAF sensor could contribute.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Check for Fuel Pressure: Listen for the fuel pump prime. When you turn the key to the 'ON' position (before cranking), you should hear a faint hum from the rear of the vehicle for a few seconds. If not, the pump might not be activating. A fuel pressure gauge would confirm actual pressure.
  2. Check for Spark: This requires a spark tester. Remove one spark plug wire (or coil-on-plug) and attach the tester. Have someone crank the engine while you observe for a strong, consistent spark.
  3. Inspect Crankshaft Position Sensor: This sensor tells the engine computer when to fire the spark and inject fuel. If it fails, the engine won't know when to start. While it often throws a code, it can sometimes fail without one initially.
  4. Try a 'Quick Start' Test: Spray a small amount of starting fluid into the air intake (after the MAF sensor). If the engine briefly sputters or starts, it confirms a fuel delivery issue.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're unable to determine if it's a fuel or spark issue, or if the immobilizer light on your dash is blinking rapidly, it's best to have your Rogue towed to a qualified Nissan technician. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact cause, especially for immobilizer system faults which often require programming.
