Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport S

Hey everyone, I have a 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport S with about 65,000 miles on it. I've been noticing a very slight shudder when accelerating gently, especially around 30-40 mph.

I'm wondering about the recommended CVT fluid change interval. The owner's manual seems a bit vague, or maybe I'm misinterpreting it. Some forums suggest 60k, others say 100k, and some even say 'lifetime' which I highly doubt.

Is it time for a CVT fluid flush and fill? Could this be related to the shudder I'm feeling, or is there something else I should be looking into? I want to keep this car running smoothly for a long time.

The shudder you're experiencing in your 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport with 65,000 miles could indeed be related to your CVT fluid, especially if it hasn't been serviced yet. Nissan's 'lifetime' fluid claim is generally for 'normal' driving conditions, which rarely applies to real-world scenarios, especially in hotter climates or with frequent stop-and-go traffic.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. CVT Fluid Service Interval: For most Nissan CVTs, especially in models like the Rogue Sport, a fluid change is recommended every 60,000 miles under normal driving conditions, and as frequently as 30,000 miles under severe conditions (towing, heavy city driving, extreme temperatures). Given your mileage, it's definitely time for a service.
  2. Causes of Shudder:
    • Degraded CVT Fluid: Over time, CVT fluid breaks down, losing its lubricating and friction-modifying properties. This can lead to inefficient operation of the belt and pulleys, causing shudders or hesitation.
    • Dirty CVT Filter: Some CVTs have an external filter that can get clogged, restricting fluid flow.
    • Valve Body Issues: Less commonly, issues with the CVT's valve body or solenoids can cause shifting problems, but fluid is usually the first suspect.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • Immediate Fluid Service: Schedule a CVT fluid drain and fill (or flush if recommended by the shop) as soon as possible. Ensure they use genuine Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid.
    • Diagnostic Scan: Even without a Check Engine Light, a professional scan tool can sometimes reveal pending transmission codes or abnormal sensor readings that might point to a deeper issue.
    • Post-Service Evaluation: If the shudder persists after a proper fluid service, it's crucial to have a qualified Nissan technician diagnose the transmission further. Ignoring persistent shudder can lead to premature CVT failure, which is a costly repair.
