Vehicle: 2018 Porsche Macan S

Hey everyone,

I'm having a strange issue with my 2018 Porsche Macan S. For the past few weeks, the auto Start-Stop system has been consistently inactive, even on longer drives. I also get an intermittent battery warning light on the dash, usually when I first start the car, but it sometimes flickers while driving.

I checked the battery voltage with a multimeter, and it seems okay when the car is off (around 12.4V), but it dips a bit during cranking. I also pulled a code with my OBD-II scanner, and it's showing P0562 - System Voltage Low.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be the battery itself, or something more complex like the alternator or a sensor? Any advice on what to check next would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P0562 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates 'System Voltage Low,' which is a common issue that can manifest as an inactive Start-Stop system and an intermittent battery warning light. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Weak or Failing Battery: Even if your battery shows decent voltage when off, it might not be holding a sufficient charge under load, especially during cranking or when the Start-Stop system attempts to engage. Porsche vehicles are sensitive to battery health.

    • Action: Have your battery professionally tested for its cold cranking amps (CCA) and overall health. A battery that's 3-5 years old is often nearing the end of its life.
  2. Alternator Issues: The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and supplying power to the electrical system while the engine is running. A failing alternator might not be generating enough voltage.

    • Action: Check the charging voltage with the engine running. It should typically be between 13.5V and 14.5V. If it's consistently lower, the alternator might be faulty.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Sensor: Modern Porsches use a sophisticated BMS, often with a sensor on the negative battery cable. This sensor monitors battery current, voltage, and temperature. A faulty sensor can send incorrect data to the engine control unit (ECU), leading to charging issues or disabling features like Start-Stop.

    • Action: While harder to diagnose without specialized tools, a failing BMS sensor can mimic battery or alternator problems.
  4. Wiring or Connections: Loose, corroded, or damaged wiring in the charging system (battery terminals, alternator connections, ground straps) can cause voltage drops and trigger the P0562 code.

    • Action: Visually inspect all battery terminals, alternator connections, and main ground straps for cleanliness and tightness.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked the basic battery voltage and connections and the issue persists, it's highly recommended to take your 2018 Macan S to a qualified Porsche specialist. They have the diagnostic tools (like PIWIS) to accurately test the battery, alternator, and especially the Battery Management System and its sensors. Ignoring a persistent low voltage issue can lead to further electrical problems or leave you stranded.
