Vehicle: 2020 Porsche Macan S

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Porsche Macan S. My Apple CarPlay keeps randomly disconnecting, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for several minutes. It's incredibly annoying, especially when I'm using navigation or on a call.

I've tried a few things already: I've updated my iPhone to the latest iOS, tried different USB cables (including a brand new Apple-certified one), and even done a soft reset of the PCM by holding down the volume knob. Sometimes it helps for a bit, but the problem always comes back.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Macan or other modern Porsche models? Is there a known fix or something I'm missing? Could it be a software bug in the PCM itself, or something more serious? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Intermittent Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto) disconnections are a common complaint, and while frustrating, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take before needing a professional.

  1. Check for Software Updates: Start by ensuring both your smartphone's operating system (iOS or Android) and your Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system firmware are fully up to date. Porsche frequently releases updates that address known bugs and improve connectivity. You can usually check for PCM updates at your dealership or sometimes via the vehicle's infotainment settings if equipped with over-the-air updates.
  2. Inspect USB Cables: Even if you've tried different cables, it's crucial to use high-quality, MFi-certified (for Apple devices) or reputable data cables. Cheap, damaged, or charge-only cables are a very common cause of intermittent connectivity. Try a brand new, short, high-quality cable directly from the phone to the car's USB port.
  3. Perform a PCM Reset: A soft reset of the PCM can often resolve temporary glitches. In most Porsche models, you can do this by pressing and holding the volume/power knob for about 10-20 seconds until the system reboots. If the problem persists, a factory reset might be considered, but be aware this will erase all personal settings and paired devices.
  4. Check USB Port Integrity: Visually inspect the vehicle's USB port for any debris, bent pins, or signs of damage. Sometimes a small piece of lint or dirt can interfere with the connection.
  5. Consider Wireless Interference: If your Macan supports wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, other wireless devices or strong Wi-Fi signals in the vicinity could potentially cause interference. Try disabling Bluetooth on other nearby devices.
  6. When to See a Shop: If you've exhausted the above troubleshooting steps and the issue continues, it's time to visit a Porsche service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools that can read specific fault codes related to the PCM or USB module.
    • Common OBD Codes (Dealership Level): While not standard OBD-II codes, a dealership scanner might reveal codes like B1000-00 (Control Module Fault), U0140 (Lost Communication with Body Control Module), or specific codes related to the infotainment system's internal communication.
    • Potential Causes: Beyond software glitches and faulty cables, the problem could stem from a failing USB port module, an internal PCM hardware fault, or issues with the vehicle's wiring harness.
    • What a Shop Will Do: They will perform a deeper diagnostic scan, check for PCM software updates not available to the public, test the USB port's electrical integrity, and potentially replace components if a hardware fault is identified.
