Vehicle: 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S

Hi everyone,

I'm having some frustrating issues with the charging on my 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S. Lately, the charging port isn't consistently locking when I plug in the cable. Sometimes it locks, sometimes it doesn't, and I have to fiddle with it a few times. Even when it does lock, I've had several instances where the charging session just stops unexpectedly after a while.

I've tried different charging stations and cables, both AC and DC, and the problem persists. It's making it really unreliable to charge, especially overnight. Is this a known issue with the Taycan's electrical system, or could it be something specific to my car? Any thoughts?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with your 2021 Taycan 4S charging port not locking or charging sessions being interrupted point to an electrical or mechanical fault within the charging system. This is a critical component for any EV owner.

  1. Charging Port Lock Mechanism: The most direct cause for the port not locking is a faulty locking pin mechanism. This could be a mechanical issue with the pin itself, or an electrical issue with the solenoid that actuates it. Inspect the port for any visible obstructions or damage.
  2. Communication Errors: Interrupted charging can often be due to communication errors between the car's Battery Management System (BMS) and the charging station. This can be triggered by fluctuations in the power supply, a faulty onboard charger, or issues with the car's charging control unit.
  3. Charging Inlet Control Unit: The charging inlet has its own control unit that manages the locking mechanism and communication with the charger. A fault in this module could cause both your described symptoms.
  4. Software Glitch: Modern EVs are heavily reliant on software. A bug in the car's charging software or BMS firmware could lead to these intermittent issues. Ensure your Taycan's software is fully up to date.

Common OBD Codes to look for (EV-specific):

  • P0D2F: Charging Inlet Interlock Circuit (often related to the locking mechanism)
  • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault (can sometimes be triggered by charging issues)
  • U0100/U0293: Lost Communication With ECM/PCM or Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (charging related)

When to see a shop: Given that you've tried different chargers and cables, the problem is almost certainly with your Taycan itself. It's crucial to have this inspected by a Porsche dealership or an EV-specialized independent shop. They have the necessary diagnostic tools (like PIWIS) to read specific EV charging fault codes, test the charging port's functionality, and diagnose internal component failures within the charging system or BMS. Prompt resolution is key to ensuring reliable and safe charging for your vehicle.
