Vehicle: 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Big Horn

Hey everyone, I'm experiencing some really frustrating transmission issues with my 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, Big Horn trim. Lately, the transmission has been shifting very hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's hunting for gears or delaying shifts.

It's got about 95,000 miles on it. I haven't had the transmission fluid changed yet, which I know I probably should have done by now. There's no Check Engine Light on, but the shifting is definitely not normal. It's making driving quite unpleasant.

Could this be a sign of a failing transmission, or something simpler like low fluid, a sensor, or a solenoid? Any advice from other EcoDiesel owners or transmission experts would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hard or erratic shifting on your 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with 95,000 miles can be caused by several factors, ranging from simple maintenance issues to more complex internal transmission problems. While a Check Engine Light isn't on, the transmission control module (TCM) might have stored codes that don't illuminate the MIL.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Transmission Fluid Condition and Level:

    • Cause: Low or degraded transmission fluid is a very common cause of shifting problems. Old fluid loses its lubricating and hydraulic properties, leading to increased friction and poor pressure control. The EcoDiesel's 8HP70 transmission is sensitive to fluid quality.
    • Action: Check the transmission fluid level according to your owner's manual (it's often a specific procedure involving temperature). Note the fluid's color and smell. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid indicates significant wear and heat. A fluid and filter change is highly recommended if it hasn't been done, but be aware that sometimes a fluid change on a very old, worn transmission can exacerbate existing issues if internal components are already failing.
  2. Transmission Solenoid Pack Issues:

    • Cause: The 8HP70 transmission uses a mechatronic unit with integrated solenoids to control fluid flow and gear engagement. Faulty solenoids can cause delayed, harsh, or erratic shifts.
    • Action: A professional scan tool can read transmission-specific codes and monitor solenoid operation. If a solenoid is sticking or failing, it will often throw a code or show inconsistent readings.
  3. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software/Adaptation:

    • Cause: Sometimes, the TCM's adaptive learning can get out of sync, or there might be a software update available to improve shifting performance.
    • Action: A dealership or specialized transmission shop can check for available software updates and perform a 'quick learn' or reset the adaptive values, allowing the transmission to relearn optimal shift points.
  4. Internal Transmission Wear:

    • Cause: With nearly 100,000 miles, internal components like clutch packs or valve body wear can lead to these symptoms, especially if maintenance has been deferred.
    • Action: This is typically diagnosed after ruling out simpler issues. Symptoms like slipping, delayed engagement, or persistent harsh shifts even after fluid changes and solenoid checks can point to internal wear.

When to See a Shop: Given the mileage and the nature of the problem, it's highly recommended to take your Ram to a qualified transmission specialist or a dealership. They can perform a thorough diagnostic scan for transmission-specific codes, check fluid levels and condition properly, and assess the health of the solenoid pack and internal components. Addressing this promptly can prevent more extensive and costly damage.
