2018 Ram 1500 Air Suspension Dropping Overnight - Compressor Always Running

Vehicle: 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie with the factory air suspension, and I'm running into some frustrating issues. Lately, it seems like the truck is dropping significantly overnight, sometimes almost completely deflated on one side.

When I start it up in the morning, the air compressor kicks on and runs for a really long time, trying to level the truck. It sounds like it's working overtime. I'm worried about the compressor burning out or if there's a bigger leak somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this with their 2018 Ram, and what was the fix? Is this a common problem for this model year?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Air suspension issues, particularly dropping overnight and a constantly running compressor, are common concerns for Ram 1500 owners with the optional air suspension system. This typically indicates a leak in the system or a failing component.

  1. Identify the Source of the Leak:

    • Air Springs (Bags): The most common culprit. Over time, the rubber can crack or develop pinhole leaks. You can often visually inspect them for cracks or use a spray bottle with soapy water on the air springs and connections to look for bubbles when the system is pressurized.
    • Air Lines/Fittings: Check all air lines for kinks, chafing, or loose connections. Fittings can also degrade or become loose.
    • Valve Block: This component directs air to each spring. Internal seals can fail, causing leaks.
  2. Inspect the Compressor and Dryer:

    • A constantly running compressor suggests it's trying to compensate for a leak. While it might be working, prolonged operation can lead to premature failure. The air dryer, which removes moisture from the air, can also become saturated, reducing system efficiency.
  3. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

    • Use an OBD-II scanner to check for codes related to the air suspension system. Common codes might include:
      • C15A3: Air Suspension Compressor Control Circuit
      • C15A4: Air Suspension System Pressure Sensor
      • C15A7: Air Suspension System Leak Detected
      • C15AE: Air Suspension System Over-Pressure/Under-Pressure
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If you're uncomfortable performing the inspection yourself or if you've identified a leak but lack the tools for repair, it's best to take your Ram to a qualified mechanic or dealership. Air suspension systems operate under high pressure and require specific diagnostic tools and procedures. Ignoring a persistent leak will eventually lead to compressor failure, which is a more expensive repair.
