Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 5.7L Hemi and the 8-speed transmission. I'm approaching 60,000 miles and wondering about the transmission fluid. The owner's manual seems a bit vague on the exact interval for a fluid and filter change under normal driving conditions.

I do a fair bit of towing with my travel trailer, maybe 5-6 times a year, which I know can put extra stress on the transmission. Should I be looking to get this done soon, or can it wait longer?

Also, what specific fluid type should I be using? I've heard about ZF 8-speed transmissions needing specific fluids, and I want to make sure I get the right stuff if I decide to tackle this myself or instruct my mechanic.

Summary: For 2018 Ram 1500 Hemi Transmission Fluid Change Interval & Type, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
