2018 Ram 1500 Uconnect 8.4 Freezing and Black Screen Issues

Hey everyone, I'm having some frustrating issues with the Uconnect system in my 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie. The 8.4-inch screen frequently freezes up, becoming completely unresponsive to touch. Sometimes it just goes black for several minutes before restarting itself.

This happens randomly, whether I'm using navigation, radio, or just have it on. It's really annoying, especially when I'm trying to use the backup camera or adjust climate controls. I've tried doing the soft reset (holding the volume and tuner knobs), but it only provides temporary relief.

Is this a common problem for this model year? Are there any known TSBs or software updates I should be looking into? I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue or just buggy software. Any advice on what I can do before taking it to the dealership would be great.

Summary: For 2018 Ram 1500 Uconnect 8.4 Freezing and Black Screen Issues, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
