Vehicle: 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really annoying issue with my 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie. The Uconnect 8.4-inch screen keeps freezing up and then restarting itself randomly while I'm driving. It's not just CarPlay; the whole system goes blank, then the Ram logo appears, and it boots back up. Sometimes it happens every few minutes, other times it might be fine for an hour.

It's making navigation impossible and I can't even change radio stations sometimes. Has anyone else experienced this with their Ram? Is there a known fix or a software update I might be missing? I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the volume and tuner buttons, but it only helps temporarily, if at all.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Uconnect system issues, particularly freezing and restarting, are not uncommon across various Stellantis vehicles, including the Ram 1500. This can be frustrating as it affects multiple vehicle functions.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Glitches: Outdated or corrupted software is a primary culprit. Manufacturers frequently release updates to address bugs and improve stability.
  2. Hardware Malfunction: Less common, but the Uconnect head unit itself or its internal components could be failing.
  3. Power Fluctuations: Issues with the vehicle's electrical system, such as a weak battery or alternator, can sometimes cause modules to behave erratically.
  4. Loose Connections: Wiring harnesses connecting to the Uconnect module might be loose or corroded, leading to intermittent power or data flow.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery for 15-30 minutes. This can clear residual power and force a full system reset. Reconnect and check if the issue persists.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Visit a Ram dealership or check the official Uconnect website (driveuconnect.com) for your specific VIN to see if there are any available software updates. Dealerships can perform these updates for you.
  3. Inspect Fuses: Locate the fuse box (often under the hood or under the dash) and check the fuse for the radio/Uconnect system. A blown or loose fuse can cause intermittent power issues.
  4. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While Uconnect issues don't always trigger standard OBD-II codes, a professional scan tool can sometimes reveal module-specific codes (e.g., B-codes or U-codes) related to communication errors or internal module faults.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after performing a hard reset and checking for software updates.
  • If you suspect a hardware failure with the Uconnect unit itself.
  • If you're uncomfortable checking fuses or disconnecting the battery.
  • If a diagnostic scan reveals persistent communication errors or internal module faults (e.g., U0140 - Lost Communication With Body Control Module, or B1501 - Radio Internal Fault).

A professional technician can diagnose the root cause, perform necessary software updates, or recommend a replacement head unit if hardware is at fault. They can also check the vehicle's electrical system thoroughly.
