Vehicle: 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 5.7L Hemi and the 8-speed transmission, just rolled over 75,000 miles. Lately, I've noticed a slight shudder, especially when accelerating gently between 40-50 mph, almost feels like it's struggling to decide on a gear or the torque converter is acting up. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable.

I've heard these ZF 8-speeds are 'sealed for life,' but 75k miles seems like a long time for transmission fluid. Is it time for a fluid and filter change, or could this be something else? I don't have any warning lights on the dash yet, but I'm trying to be proactive.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission shudder on Ram 1500 models, particularly with the ZF 8HP75 transmission, is a common concern as mileage increases. While ZF initially stated 'fill for life,' they later clarified that this refers to the expected service life of the vehicle under normal operating conditions, and recommended fluid changes for severe duty or higher mileage.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Fluid Degradation: Transmission fluid degrades over time and mileage due to heat and shear forces. Contaminated or worn-out fluid can lead to poor lubrication, increased friction, and issues with torque converter lock-up, manifesting as a shudder.
  2. ZF's Recommendation: ZF, the manufacturer of your 8-speed transmission, generally recommends a fluid and filter change between 75,000 to 120,000 miles, or every 8 years, especially under normal driving conditions. For severe duty (towing, heavy hauling, frequent stop-and-go, extreme temperatures), this interval should be shortened.
  3. Torque Converter: The shudder you describe is often associated with the torque converter clutch failing to engage or disengage smoothly. Fresh fluid can sometimes resolve minor issues, but a failing torque converter may require replacement.

When to see a shop:

  • If the shudder is severe, accompanied by hard shifts, or if you notice any new warning lights (e.g., Check Engine Light, Transmission Temperature Warning).
  • If a fluid and filter change does not resolve the issue, as this could indicate a more serious internal transmission problem or a failing torque converter.
  • For proper diagnosis, a professional can scan for transmission-specific fault codes (even if no dash lights are present) and perform live data monitoring to pinpoint the exact cause of the shudder. Ensure the shop uses genuine ZF fluid (Lifeguard 8) and a quality filter kit.
