Vehicle: 2021 Ram 1500 Rebel

Hello everyone, I'm having an issue with my 2021 Ram 1500 Rebel, which has the 5.7L Hemi with the eTorque system. My check engine light came on, and I'm also getting a 'Service eTorque System' message on the dash. The auto start/stop feature isn't working either.

The truck has about 45,000 miles on it. I haven't noticed any major performance issues, but the warnings are definitely concerning. I know the eTorque system is relatively new technology.

Has anyone else experienced this with their newer Ram eTorque truck? What was the cause, and what kind of repair was needed? I'm hoping it's not a huge expense.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The eTorque system in your 2021 Ram 1500 is a mild-hybrid setup designed to improve fuel economy and provide torque assist. When a 'Service eTorque System' message appears, it indicates an issue with one of its components, which can also disable the auto start/stop function.

Common Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. 48-Volt Battery Degradation/Failure: The eTorque system uses a dedicated 48-volt battery pack. Like any battery, it can degrade over time or fail, leading to system malfunctions.
    • Diagnostics: Codes like P0A0D (High Voltage System Interlock Circuit Performance) or P0A7A (Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Sense Circuit) might indicate battery issues.
  2. Belt Starter Generator (BSG) Issues: The BSG replaces the traditional alternator and starter, acting as both. Problems with the BSG itself, its wiring, or its cooling system can trigger warnings.
    • Diagnostics: Look for codes such as P0A0F (Engine Failed to Start) or P0A0B (DC/DC Converter Status Circuit).
  3. DC/DC Converter Failure: This component converts voltage between the 48V and 12V systems. A fault here can impact both the eTorque system and the conventional 12V electrical system.
    • Diagnostics: Codes like P0A0B (DC/DC Converter Status Circuit) or P0A0C (DC/DC Converter Performance).
  4. Software Glitches: Sometimes, a simple software update or a system reset can resolve intermittent eTorque warnings.

When to See a Shop:

  • Given the complexity and high-voltage nature of the eTorque system, it's highly recommended to take your truck to a Ram dealership or a specialized shop equipped to handle hybrid systems. They have the necessary diagnostic tools and safety training to properly diagnose and repair these components. Ignoring these warnings could potentially lead to further system damage or leave you stranded. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage components yourself without proper training and equipment.
