Vehicle: 2021 Ram 1500 Limited

Hello everyone,

I'm scratching my head over an issue with my 2021 Ram 1500 Limited. Both the ABS light and the Traction Control light (the squiggly car icon) came on simultaneously a few days ago and haven't gone off. The truck has about 45,000 miles on it.

I haven't noticed any strange braking behavior, and the truck drives normally otherwise. I tried scanning for codes with my basic OBD-II scanner, but it's not showing any engine codes. I know ABS/Traction Control issues often don't trigger standard P-codes.

Could this be a wheel speed sensor, or something more serious like the ABS module? Has anyone else experienced this with their newer Ram 1500? What was your fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's common for ABS and Traction Control lights to illuminate together on your 2021 Ram 1500 Limited, as these systems are interconnected and rely on similar sensor inputs. The absence of standard P-codes is also typical, as these systems generate specific C-codes (Chassis codes) that require a more advanced scanner to read.

Here are the most common causes for these lights:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS): This is by far the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/Traction Control module receives inconsistent data, triggering the lights. A faulty WSS can also cause erroneous ABS activation or a stiff brake pedal.
  2. ABS Module Failure: While less common than a sensor, the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module itself can fail. This module processes all the sensor data and controls the ABS pump and valves. A failing module can lead to various warning lights and system malfunctions.
  3. Wiring and Connectors: Damaged wiring or corroded connectors leading to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can interrupt signals, causing the system to fault.
  4. Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes cause these lights to come on, as it provides input to the ABS/Traction Control system.
  5. Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger these lights, though it's usually accompanied by a separate brake warning light.

What to do:

  • Visual Inspection: Check around each wheel for any obvious damage to the wheel speed sensor wires or the sensors themselves. Look for debris or corrosion.
  • Check Brake Fluid: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the proper level.

When to see a shop:

Since your basic OBD-II scanner can't read the specific C-codes, your next step should be to take your Ram to a dealership or a shop with an advanced diagnostic scanner (like a WiTech or equivalent). These tools can communicate directly with the ABS module, retrieve the exact fault codes, and often monitor live data from each wheel speed sensor. This will quickly pinpoint whether it's a specific sensor, wiring issue, or a more serious (and costly) ABS module problem, ensuring you don't replace parts unnecessarily.
