Vehicle: 2021 Ram 1500 Longhorn

Hi everyone,

I'm having some weird electrical problems with my 2021 Ram 1500 Longhorn. The driver's side power window has completely stopped working – it won't go up or down from any switch. On top of that, the power door locks on the driver's side (and sometimes the passenger front) are acting up, intermittently failing to lock or unlock with the remote or the interior switch.

I've checked the fuses in the fuse box under the hood, and they all look good. Could this be a problem with the master switch on the driver's door, or something more serious like a wiring harness issue? It's really frustrating not being able to use my window!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent or complete failure of power windows and door locks, especially on the driver's side, often points to issues within the door's electrical system. Given that both systems are affected, it suggests a common point of failure.

Common Causes:

  1. Driver's Door Master Switch: This is a very common culprit. The master switch controls all windows and locks, and its internal contacts can wear out or corrode, leading to erratic behavior or complete failure.
  2. Wiring Harness Damage: The wiring harness that passes between the door jamb and the door itself is subjected to constant flexing. Over time, wires can fray, break, or short out, disrupting power or signal to the window motor and lock actuator.
  3. Faulty Window Motor/Regulator: While less likely to affect both window and locks simultaneously, a failing window motor or regulator can cause the window to stop working.
  4. Door Lock Actuator Failure: The actuator itself can fail, preventing the lock from engaging or disengaging. If multiple locks are affected, it could point to a control issue.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM): The BCM controls many body electrical functions. A rare BCM fault could cause widespread issues, but typically other symptoms would also be present.
  6. Blown Fuse: Although you've checked, sometimes a specific fuse for a module or circuit might be overlooked, or a fuse could be intermittently failing.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Inspect Door Jamb Wiring: Open the driver's door and carefully inspect the rubber boot that covers the wiring harness between the door and the body. Look for any pinched, frayed, or broken wires.
  2. Test Other Switches: If the passenger window also fails from the driver's switch but works from its own switch, it strongly points to the master switch.
  3. Check for OBD Codes: While not always present for these issues, a scan tool might reveal 'B' codes (body electrical) related to door modules, window motors, or lock actuators, which can help narrow down the problem.

When to See a Shop: If a visual inspection of the wiring doesn't reveal an obvious issue, or if you suspect the master switch or a deeper wiring problem, it's advisable to take your Ram to a qualified technician. Diagnosing and repairing door wiring harnesses can be complex, requiring door panel removal and specialized tools. A professional can accurately diagnose whether it's the master switch, a wiring issue, or a faulty component like a window motor or lock actuator, ensuring a correct and lasting repair.
