2023 Ram 1500 Limited Key Fob Not Detected / Passive Entry Issues

Vehicle: 2023 Ram 1500 Limited

My 2023 Ram 1500 Limited is acting up with its key fob and passive entry system. Sometimes it says "Key Fob Not Detected" even when the fob is clearly inside the truck, making it difficult to start. Additionally, the passive entry feature on the door handles only works intermittently; sometimes it unlocks with a touch, other times I have to use the unlock button on the fob.

I've already replaced the fob battery with a brand new one, but that hasn't solved the problem. Could this be an issue with the truck's sensors, an antenna, or something else entirely? It's very frustrating on a newer vehicle.

  1. Key Fob Battery - Re-check: Even if you've replaced the battery, it's worth double-checking. Ensure it's a fresh, high-quality CR2032 battery and inserted correctly. Sometimes new batteries can be faulty, or the contact points inside the fob might be dirty. Try a different brand of battery if possible, as some generic brands can be less reliable.
  2. Interference: Electronic interference can disrupt key fob signals. Try the fob in different locations, away from large metal objects, power lines, or other strong radio signals. Also, ensure no other electronic devices (like dash cams, phone chargers, or other key fobs) are interfering inside your 2023 Ram 1500's cabin.
  3. Passive Entry Antenna: The passive entry system relies on antennas located in the door handles and inside the cabin. If one of these antennas is faulty or its wiring is damaged, the system will become intermittent. This is harder to diagnose without specialized tools.
  4. Diagnostic Scan: A diagnostic scan tool can be very helpful here. Look for B-codes (Body codes) related to the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) or Passive Entry system. Common codes might include B1A25 (Key Fob Battery Low - even if new, could indicate a fob issue), B1A79 (Passive Entry Antenna Fault), or U-codes related to communication with the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module.
  5. Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) Module: The WIN module (also sometimes called the RF Hub) is responsible for communicating with the key fob and interpreting its signals. A fault in this module can cause "Key Fob Not Detected" messages and passive entry issues. This module often requires programming if replaced, making it a dealership-level repair.
  6. When to See a Shop: If replacing the key fob battery and checking for interference doesn't resolve the problem, it's highly recommended to take your Ram 1500 Limited to a dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith. They have the necessary diagnostic equipment to read specific codes, test the key fob's signal strength, and diagnose issues with the passive entry antennas or the WIN module. These components often require specialized programming to function correctly with your vehicle.
