Vehicle: 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn with the 5.7L Hemi and the 8-speed automatic. I've noticed a slight shudder or vibration, particularly when accelerating gently at lower speeds (around 20-40 mph), almost like it's struggling to find the right gear.

Additionally, I've had a few instances of surprisingly hard downshifts, especially when coming to a stop. It's not constant, but it's enough to make me wonder if something is wrong. The truck has about 60,000 miles on it.

Is this normal for the 8-speed, or should I be worried? Are there any common TSBs or known issues for this model year? I want to make sure I'm not ignoring a potential problem.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Understanding the 8-Speed Transmission (ZF 8HP75): The 8-speed automatic transmission in your 2019 Ram 1500 is generally robust, but like any complex component, it can exhibit specific behaviors. A slight shudder or hard shifts can sometimes be normal characteristics, but they can also indicate an emerging issue.

  2. Common Causes & TSBs:

    • Software Updates: Many reported transmission quirks, including delayed engagement, harsh shifts, or minor shudders, have been addressed by software updates from Ram. These updates optimize shift logic and torque converter lock-up. This is often the first thing a dealer will check.
    • Torque Converter Issues: A common cause for shuddering, especially at lower speeds or during light acceleration, can be a failing torque converter. The lock-up clutch inside the converter can wear, causing vibrations.
    • Low/Contaminated Fluid: While the 8-speed is considered 'sealed for life' by some, fluid degradation or low fluid levels can absolutely cause shifting problems. A fluid and filter change (using the correct ZF-approved fluid) can sometimes resolve minor issues.
    • Valve Body Issues: Less common, but internal valve body issues can lead to erratic shifting.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent or Worsening Symptoms: If the shuddering or hard shifts are consistent, getting worse, or accompanied by any warning lights (like a check engine light or transmission temperature warning), you should have it inspected immediately.
    • Diagnostic Scan: A professional shop can perform a diagnostic scan for transmission-specific trouble codes (e.g., P0741 for torque converter clutch performance) and monitor live data to pinpoint the issue.
    • Fluid Inspection: They can also check the transmission fluid level and condition, which requires specific procedures for this transmission.
  4. Recommendations:

    • Start by checking for any available software updates at a Ram dealership. This is the least invasive and often effective first step.
    • If updates don't help, discuss a transmission fluid and filter service. Even if not officially 'required' at 60k miles, it can be beneficial.
    • Be prepared for a potential torque converter replacement if diagnostics point in that direction, which is a more significant repair.
