Vehicle: 2023 Ram 1500 Rebel

Hello everyone,

I woke up this morning, started my 2023 Ram 1500 Rebel, and immediately noticed that both the ABS light and the Traction Control light (the one with the skidding car icon) were illuminated on my dash. There are no other warning lights, and the truck seems to drive normally, though I haven't tried to engage ABS or traction control since the lights came on.

It's a relatively new truck, only about 25,000 miles. I haven't done any off-roading recently or hit any major potholes. I'm wondering if this is a common sensor issue or something more serious. What should I check before taking it to the dealer?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control lights illuminate on your 2023 Ram 1500 Rebel, it indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), as the Traction Control System relies heavily on ABS components. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor becomes dirty, damaged, or fails electronically, the ABS module loses critical input, triggering both lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this are P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction) or specific C-codes like C0031-C0034 (Wheel Speed Sensor related).
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector: The wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor can get damaged, or the connector can become corroded or loose, interrupting the signal.
  3. ABS Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair and usually results in persistent lights and potentially other braking issues.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger these lights, as it can affect the hydraulic pressure the ABS system relies on. Check your brake fluid reservoir.
  5. Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it gets damaged or accumulates debris, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.

What You Can Do:

  • Check Brake Fluid: Ensure your brake fluid level is within the 'Min' and 'Max' marks on the reservoir.
  • Visual Inspection: Look at each wheel for any obvious damage to the wheel speed sensor wires or the sensor itself. Sometimes debris can get lodged near them.

When to See a Shop:

  • Soon: While the truck may seem to drive normally, your ABS and Traction Control systems are currently disabled, meaning you won't have the benefit of these safety features during emergency braking or in slippery conditions. It's crucial to have a professional diagnose the exact fault. They will use a specialized scan tool to read the specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the ABS module, which will pinpoint the exact component causing the issue, whether it's a sensor, wiring, or the module itself.
