Vehicle: 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 5.7L Hemi

Hello everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel with the 5.7L Hemi. Lately, it's been taking a long time to crank before it finally starts, and sometimes it even stalls shortly after starting or when I come to a stop. It feels like it's not getting enough fuel.

I've noticed a slight hesitation under acceleration too. The truck has about 70,000 miles on it. I haven't seen a Check Engine Light yet, but I'm worried it's only a matter of time. This is really inconvenient and makes me nervous about driving it.

Has anyone else with a 2019 Ram 1500 Hemi experienced long cranks or stalling issues? What was the culprit? Could it be the fuel pump, or something else in the fuel system?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Long crank times and stalling, especially with hesitation under acceleration, strongly suggest a problem within your 2019 Ram 1500's fuel delivery system. Here are the most common culprits:

  1. Failing Fuel Pump: This is a primary suspect. A weak or failing fuel pump won't deliver adequate fuel pressure to the engine, leading to long cranks (as it struggles to build pressure), stalling (especially at idle where less pressure is needed but still critical), and hesitation under load.
  2. Clogged Fuel Filter: While many modern Rams have a 'lifetime' fuel filter integrated into the fuel pump module, it can still become restricted over time, especially with contaminated fuel. A clogged filter restricts fuel flow.
  3. Faulty Fuel Pressure Sensor: If the sensor that monitors fuel rail pressure is faulty, it can send incorrect readings to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), leading to incorrect fuel delivery and the symptoms you describe.
  4. Fuel Pump Relay: A failing fuel pump relay can intermittently cut power to the fuel pump, causing starting issues or stalling.
  5. Weak Battery: While less likely to cause stalling after starting, a weak battery can contribute to long crank times. However, the stalling points more towards fuel delivery.

Diagnostics:

  • Fuel Pressure Test: A mechanic can connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail to measure actual fuel pressure during cranking, idling, and under load. This is the most direct way to diagnose fuel pump health.
  • OBD-II Scan: Even without a CEL, pending or historical codes related to fuel pressure (e.g., P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low, P0191 - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Range/Performance) might be present.

When to See a Shop: It's highly advisable to get your Ram inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. Driving with an unreliable fuel system can leave you stranded. A professional can accurately diagnose the issue by performing a fuel pressure test and checking for diagnostic trouble codes. Replacing a fuel pump can be a significant job, so proper diagnosis is key to avoid unnecessary repairs.
