Vehicle: 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing a noticeable pulsation through the brake pedal when I apply the brakes in my 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie. It's especially prominent at highway speeds when slowing down, but I can feel it at lower speeds too. It's not a grinding noise, just that pulsing feel.

The truck has about 75,000 miles on it. I had the pads and rotors replaced about 25,000 miles ago at a local shop. I'm wondering if it's warped rotors again or something else entirely. Any ideas on what I should check first?

It's making me a bit nervous, so I want to get to the bottom of it quickly. Thanks for any advice!

Pulsating brakes are a common issue and typically point to a few specific problems. Here's what's likely causing it and what you should do:

  1. Warped Brake Rotors: This is the most common cause. Rotors don't actually 'warp' in the traditional sense; rather, uneven deposits of brake pad material on the rotor surface create high spots, leading to the pulsation you feel. This can happen from overheating or improper bedding of new pads.
  2. Uneven Pad Wear: If your brake pads are wearing unevenly, or if a caliper isn't functioning correctly, it can lead to inconsistent pressure on the rotor, causing a pulsation.
  3. Sticking Caliper: A caliper that isn't releasing properly can cause excessive heat and uneven wear on both the pads and rotors, leading to pulsation.
  4. Loose Wheel Bearings: While less common for pulsation, a loose wheel bearing can cause vibrations that might be mistaken for brake pulsation. This would usually be accompanied by a humming or grinding noise that changes with speed.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the pulsation is severe, accompanied by grinding noises, or if your truck pulls to one side when braking. These are signs of a potentially dangerous brake system failure.
  • Soon: If the pulsation is mild but persistent. While it might just be uneven rotor wear, it's best to have a professional inspect the entire braking system to ensure safety and prevent further damage.

An experienced technician will be able to properly diagnose the issue by inspecting your rotors for runout, checking pad wear, and ensuring your calipers are functioning correctly. They can also machine your existing rotors (if they have enough material) or recommend replacement.
