Vehicle: 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn

Hi everyone, I'm experiencing some concerning transmission issues with my 2019 Ram 1500, which has the 8-speed automatic (8HP75). It has around 70,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a distinct shudder, especially when accelerating gently between 30-50 mph, almost like it's struggling to find the right gear. It also occasionally has some pretty hard shifts, particularly when downshifting from higher gears.

I'm worried this might be a sign of a bigger problem. Is this a common issue with the 8-speed transmissions in the 2019 Ram 1500? I've heard about some TSBs related to transmission behavior. What could be causing this, and what kind of repair am I looking at?

I'm hoping it's not a full transmission replacement. Any advice on what to check or what questions to ask the dealership would be highly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Transmission shudder and hard shifts in the 8-speed automatic (8HP75) are issues that have been reported by some 2019 Ram 1500 owners. While these transmissions are generally robust, specific issues can arise.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Issues: A common cause of shudder, especially at consistent speeds, is a failing or worn torque converter clutch. This can cause the TCC to engage and disengage improperly, leading to a vibration or shudder.
    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Incorrect fluid level or degraded fluid can significantly impact transmission performance, leading to harsh shifts and shudder. The 8HP75 uses a specific ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid (or equivalent).
    • Software Glitches/Adaptive Learning: Sometimes, the transmission control module (TCM) software can develop glitches, or its adaptive learning values can become skewed, leading to suboptimal shift patterns.
    • Valve Body Issues: Problems within the transmission's valve body can affect fluid pressure and flow, causing erratic shifting.
    • Internal Wear: Less common at 70k miles, but internal component wear (clutches, solenoids) can also contribute.
  2. Diagnostics & OBD Codes:

    • OBD-II Codes: A failing transmission will often trigger codes, such as P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0740 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction), or specific gear ratio error codes (e.g., P0731-P0736).
    • Fluid Check: While difficult on sealed transmissions, a professional can check the fluid level and condition.
    • Scan Tool Data: A dealership or specialized transmission shop can use a diagnostic tool to monitor transmission parameters, solenoid operation, and TCC lock-up status in real-time.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should get your truck to a qualified Ram dealership or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly damage.
    • Mention the specific conditions under which the shudder and hard shifts occur. The dealership can check for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to transmission software updates or known component issues for your model year.
    • Depending on the diagnosis, repairs could range from a simple software reflash or fluid/filter change to torque converter replacement (often $1,500-$3,000+) or, in worst-case scenarios, a transmission overhaul or replacement (several thousands of dollars). Early intervention is key to potentially avoiding the most expensive repairs.
