Vehicle: 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a pretty significant vibration through the steering wheel and brake pedal whenever I apply the brakes in my 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie. It's especially noticeable at highway speeds, but even around town, I can feel it.

The truck has about 75,000 miles on it. I had the pads and rotors replaced about 20,000 miles ago, but this feeling has slowly been getting worse over the last few months.

Could this be warped rotors again, or something else entirely? Any advice on what to check first would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing vibration during braking is a common issue, and while 'warped rotors' is a frequent culprit, it's often more accurately described as uneven rotor thickness or hot spots. Here's what you should investigate:

  1. Inspect Rotors and Pads:

    • Visually check your front and rear rotors for any obvious grooves, cracks, or discoloration (blue/purple spots indicating overheating). Uneven wear or thickness variation is the primary cause of brake pulsation.
    • Check the brake pads for even wear. If one pad is significantly more worn than the other on the same wheel, it could indicate a sticking caliper.
  2. Check Calipers:

    • A sticking caliper piston or slide pins can cause a pad to drag, leading to localized overheating and uneven rotor wear. This will manifest as vibration and potentially a burning smell or excessive heat from one wheel after driving.
  3. Wheel Bearings and Suspension Components:

    • While less common for only braking vibration, worn wheel bearings or loose suspension components (like tie rods or ball joints) can exacerbate or mimic brake issues. Try wiggling the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9 o'clock, with the truck jacked up to check for play.
  4. Tire Balance and Alignment:

    • Though typically causing vibration at speed without braking, severely unbalanced tires can sometimes contribute to a perceived braking vibration, especially if combined with other minor issues.

When to See a Shop: If you've inspected these items and aren't comfortable performing brake work yourself, or if the problem persists, it's crucial to visit a qualified mechanic. Braking system issues compromise safety. They can accurately diagnose rotor runout, caliper function, and suspension integrity using specialized tools. Ignoring persistent brake vibration can lead to premature wear of other components and reduced stopping power.
