Vehicle: 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 5.7L Hemi, and it's time for an oil change. I usually just take it to the dealer, but I'm thinking of doing it myself this time. I'm a bit confused about the oil type and weight. The manual says one thing, but I hear different opinions online.

Should I stick with conventional or go full synthetic? And what's the recommended oil weight for the Hemi? I live in a pretty moderate climate, no extreme hot or cold. Also, how often should I be changing it? I mostly do city driving with some highway commutes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

For your 2018 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi engine, choosing the correct oil is crucial for longevity and performance. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Oil Type and Weight: The manufacturer recommends SAE 5W-20 full synthetic engine oil that meets Chrysler material standard MS-6395. While some older Hemi engines might have used conventional, for your 2018 model, synthetic is the way to go. It offers superior protection, especially with features like the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) which can be sensitive to oil quality.

  2. Oil Change Interval: Ram's recommended oil change interval for the 5.7L Hemi is typically 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, under normal driving conditions. However, if you engage in severe duty conditions (e.g., frequent short trips, extensive idling, towing heavy loads, dusty environments, extreme temperatures), it's wise to shorten that interval to 5,000 miles or 6 months.

  3. Filter: Always use a high-quality oil filter that meets or exceeds OEM specifications. Mopar filters are a safe bet, but reputable aftermarket brands like Wix, Mann, or PurolatorONE are also good choices.

Causes of premature wear without proper oil:

  • Sludge buildup, especially in the MDS lifters.
  • Increased friction and heat, leading to accelerated engine component wear.
  • Reduced fuel economy.

When to see a shop:

  • If you notice persistent low oil pressure warnings after an oil change.
  • If you're unsure about draining and refilling correctly, or have trouble locating the filter.
  • If you find significant metal shavings in your drained oil, which could indicate internal engine wear.
