Vehicle: 2018 Ram 2500 Big Horn

Hey folks,

I'm having a persistent problem with the integrated trailer brake controller (ITBC) on my 2018 Ram 2500 Big Horn. When I hook up my travel trailer, the truck often says 'Trailer Brake Controller Not Detected' or 'Check Trailer Wiring'. Sometimes it works fine for a bit, then randomly stops.

I've checked the trailer's wiring, and it seems okay – lights work, and I've tested it on another truck. I've also cleaned the 7-pin connector on my Ram. It's really frustrating, especially when towing heavy loads, as I rely on that brake controller.

Has anyone else run into this with their Ram 2500? Could it be a faulty ITBC module, or maybe something with the truck's wiring harness? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with the integrated trailer brake controller (ITBC) on Ram trucks can be concerning, especially when towing. Here's a diagnostic approach:

  1. Verify Trailer Connection: Ensure the 7-pin connector is fully seated and locked. Inspect both the truck's and trailer's connectors for bent pins, corrosion, or debris. Use dielectric grease to protect connections.
  2. Check Truck's 7-Pin Receptacle: Examine the truck's 7-pin receptacle for any damage or corrosion. Sometimes, the internal pins can become loose or corroded, leading to intermittent contact.
  3. Test with a Different Trailer (if possible): If you have access to another trailer, try connecting it to your Ram. This helps determine if the issue is with your truck or specific to your travel trailer.
  4. Inspect Fuses and Relays: Consult your owner's manual for the location of the trailer brake controller fuses and relays (often in the under-hood fuse box). Check for any blown fuses or faulty relays.
  5. OBD-II Scan: A diagnostic scan can reveal communication issues. Look for codes like U0140 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module) or U0121 (Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module), as the ITBC often communicates through these systems. Specific ITBC codes might also appear, indicating a module fault.

Common Causes:

  • Corroded or damaged trailer wiring/connectors.
  • Faulty ITBC module.
  • Issues with the truck's wiring harness leading to the ITBC or the 7-pin connector.
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for the ITBC circuit.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked the basic connections, fuses, and tried another trailer without success, it's time to visit a Ram dealership or a reputable automotive electrical shop. They can perform advanced diagnostics, test the ITBC module directly, and inspect the truck's wiring harness for continuity and shorts. Replacement of the ITBC module often requires programming, which requires specialized tools.
